when setting the ignition timing the vfaqs procedures say to ground the timing connector (the one behind the battery). isn't there something else that needs to be grounded as well? i think i remember reading the procedure somewhere and it was more involved than the vfaq procedure.
 
It is the diagnostic connector under your streeing wheel. I think, but please check first, it is pin number nine in the connector.
 
For timing, the timing connector is all you need to ground.
I think you're confusing it with setting base idle which requires grounding the timing connector and a pin in your diagnostics connector.
It is recommended that you make sure your base idle is set correctly prior to setting base timing.
