I was just wondering do any of you know where I could get a guide to show me how to replace the serp belt? Mine got shredded today, and I really dont have the money for the shop right now, I was told it would be around 100$ (does that sound right?). But I was told it was rather easy and the belt could range from 10-30$, I cant find anything in my Haynes manuel or Vfaq or using the search here =(

Ill scower the haynes some more
What are the tools I will need and what am I looking to do?

Thanks.

Which belt was it? It's really easy, and depending on which belt, extremely easy. You just need a few sockets and a jack... and something to drink while you do this... and some friends to help you drink it. :thumb:

Tell me which specifically and I'll run you through it real quick... I'm redoing my belts tonight after re-torqueing my tensioners. At least you don't have to deal with those crappy T-belt covers or fender liner.

I know that you are N/T, but it's all good.

Thanks, someone did it for me, although they dident show me what they did 8-( IT was the A/C and Power Steering belt.

Should I change any other belts after changing this one? I just got the t-belt done.

injector, since we are on the topic, i will need to replace the p/w steering belt and acbelt as well. could you please do a quick write up on how to do this?

It's really easy, I'd do a write up, but I'm up to my elbows in out of phase balance shafts. Oh, well...

1. Jack up car (you don't have to, but it makes rotating the engine to access the bolts easier).
2. Support engine with jack, wooden block to disperse weight widely, and cardboard
3. Pull off driver side (turbo car since that's what's in your profile) engine mount. (17mm and a 14mm I think)
4. Loosen and remove the waterpump pulley (4 bolts 10mm I think). remove belt.
5. Loosen the Alternator bracket and release the tension. remove belt. (12mm for brackets)
6. Loosen the A/C belt tensioner bracket and release the tension. remove belt.
7. replace belts in opposite order. It is easier to first put on the ac belt, give it tension. put back the pulleys, and do the remaining two belts. the brackets are diff from gen to gen but it is essentially the same.
8. put every thing back together.
Some may say that not all of this is necessary, but it is the fastest way to do the job if you don't have hands the size of a three year old.

Defiant,
Thanks for the clarification. :D

Inspect the belts. If they show excessive wear, or if you can see it cracking from heat (pinch the belt and if you can see small cracks) then you should, but I will say that if you aren't going on any long trips, or drive very far and have your timing belt covers on, then if one snaps, you should be okay till you get home or to the auto store (this has happened to me). If you don't have the t-belt covers, then there is always the chance that it will get caught and take your engine with it. Power steering should be okay to lose; the only one to be really concerned with to me is the water pump belt. Any maintenance nut will tell you to go ahead and, you probably should have while you were in there but if it's together and running, why screw with it. "If it's not broke, don't fix it." I'm going to get it for this post, I can feel it.
