Well, finally tomorrow I'm going to take the rear cover off the M/T to tighten the 36mm nut that's gotten loose that allows the shifter to move around in 5th gear.

Looks like I've got everthing needed to do this job including the know-how from reading VFAQ and posting here.

The only thing I'm unsure about is getting that wave spring re-installed properly. Can anyone who's done this job either offer a good description or pic of how that spring goes back in there so I get this done right?

I did that for the first time today. I simply didn't take the wave spring off - simple as that.

Same here, The wave spring will usually stay in the cover when you pull it apart. If it does fall out use some real good wheel bearing grease to make it "stick" to the case. It should stay put though.

Ok I tightened the nut today and the wave spring stayed inside the cover but it appeared kind of loose in there. I actually pulled on it a bit and it came loose but I seated it back down and it stayed there. Since I got the cover back on now and shifter goes to all gears + reverse is it a concern that the wave spring could pop off while tranny is together and running? Beecause it stays in there but I didn't use any grease or secure it with tabs but just seated it back to where it looks like it belongs and if I held the cover upside down it looked like there was enough friction to not allow it to fall out if you know what I mean.

All it does is apply enough pressure to the reverse synchro to keep it from rattling. It is sandwiched between the synchro, and bottom of the reverse brake cone, when assembled.
