in a 1G, the rear defrost switch is momentary. So even if you were to replace it with a brand new one, it will never 'click' or latch into an on position.
1G's seem to have a problem with the rear windshield's defroster's electrical contacts breaking off of the glass. I would check them first. There are two on each side of the rear glass about 1' away from the rear gas struts that support the hatch lid.
If you have already verified that all contacts & fuses are good, I'd look into the rear detrost relay (located in the engine bay, next to your injector resistor pack).
Several years later and im running into this probelm. Where is that relay!? I cant find any pictures or nothin anywhere! I had to resolder on my contacts on the rear window and yet that did t work. Ive tried two different defroster buttons. None light up or engage. Fuses are fine? So last thing to check is the relay.in a 1G, the rear defrost switch is momentary.
