I tried searching but didn't find anything. Has anybody ever put new studs in a 3bolt? Since that is normally where it shears off, I was thinking of just tapping it for bigger stronger studs? What do you think?

Are you talking about the 6 bolts that hold it to the crossmember?

Im actully talking about the 3 bolts on each axle that bolt up to the hub. It was a suggestion sombody made to me and I haven't had time to jack up the rear and take a closer look, but being these cars have been around for a while maby sombody has already done it, and or knows sombody that has.

Now im confused. Its been a while since I was under the back half of my car, the axle bolts up the the rear pumpkin via 3 bolts right? Or do the rear axles bolt up to the hubs via 3 bolts? Either way, I know it always shears right where the 3bolts are, so an older muscle car guy brought up the point of instead of swapping the whole rear end, drill and tapp bigger stronger bolts in place of the weak 3.

The axle slides into the pumpkin via splines, just like the front axles. It connects to the hub by way of those 3 bolts. 4 bolt rear end has 4 bolts :) The axles do shear off right at the pumpkin. If you are really lucky, it will shear off inside, and just act like a plug. Then you can disconnect those 3 bolts from the hub, and drive home. Which is exactly what I did at the SO last year. Snapped my 3 bolt axle, disconnected it, then drove 350 miles home :)

Ok See I always thought it broke right at the hub. So much for that idea.
