I just bought new exhaust for my 71 to replace the horrible piece that is on there now. I have run into a big problem though. The driver's side header collector wants to sit right where the shift linkage for the column shift is. As far as I can see no one makes a cable kit, and I do NOT want to switch to an aftermarket floor shifter. Any ideas? Maybe make my own cable kit?

Are they aftermarket headers? I'm kind of confused whats going on...if the exhaust doesn't fit, send it back and get the right ones. Then let the company know and you might get some brownie points OR if you're LUCKY a new exhaust for helping them correct a problem.

This is pretty common. Lokar makes a kit for this on gm A bodys. I am sure they have others too, I dont' know about your paticualr app. You should just call them

Good call on Lokar. I saw they had the GM kits, but I wasn't sure they had others. I'll have to give them a call. Thanks.

As far as what's going on. The headers are correct for the car/motor, but the fact that the car was not originally dual exhaust, and is a column shift, means that there is a part there that wouldn't be on a factory dual/manual/console auto car. The solution lies on moving the linkage. Any dual setup you get is going to have this problem.
