Ok I know the Evo 16g has a higher hp rating, at 380-400hp (seen many diff. numbers). My question is, where is the power difference evident vs a big 16g, or even a standard 16g? The reason is, I don't want to make stupid high horsepower numbers, I don't care if I break into the 12s, I just want good midrange to some top end power that's respectable. Is the difference in a 16g/big 16g and evo16g only from like 6000 RPM+ or is it really noticeable throughout the whole powerband?

I also have a dual stage boost controller, and I don't want a turbo that's going to fall flat on it's face at like 14psi. I'm throwing numbers in my head around of one setting at about 12-15psi and the second setting at like 18-20. If a standard, or big 16g will be working out of it's effeciency range at these numbers then of course I'll have to pick out a different turbo.

I think you'd be happy with any of the three turbos you mentioned, but if you want the quickest spool, the S16G would be your choice. The EVO III will flow more air up top (+6 lbs/min.) than the small or big variants and will see reasonably close spool time. If you don't have lofty goals in mind, any of these will do well. As far as efficiency range, I run a Big16G at 24psi daily with no issues. You'll find that while the turbo can breathe that well up top, you'll hit somewhat of a brick wall on stock cams. Then again, if more midrange is your goal this shouldn't be a problem. You'll likely find, however that 16G's really "wake up" around 17psi, so while you can run them below that, 17psi and above is where the fun starts. If I were you, I'd grap a used S16G and have at it.

Work within your budget and I'm sure you'll find any of those will work like a charm.

Good luck!

Ahh I saw where Turbochargers.com I think it was, has all 3 MHI 16gs for $459. I don't think I want to get the GT because it's not MHI, and it just doesn't sound like a good idea to me. So for the same price, I reckon I'll spring for the Evo since it has more potential than the others, and is the same price. Thanks for your informative response.

I would say go with the evoIII. It spools super quick and gives you that extra top end compared to the small & big. The spool on the evoIII is basically what the t25 was stock so its probably just as quick if not quicker then your 14b. The evoIII may be slightly slower on spool compared to the s16g but it would be very minimal, maybe 100 rpms. The reson why is because of its thinner & lighter comp wheel, so even though its larger it will spool faster then the reg big 16g. I have one and for street driving its amazing. At 14 psi it would run circles around the t25 set at 16 psi and felt better in every area. At 17+ psi is when it starts to get fun

Alright, I'm still running stock SMIC and BOV right now, so I'll have to keep the numbers low if I keep the car (it's in the classifieds) until I can upgrade, but you guys have answered my question thoroughly. Thanks.

You won't notice much of a difference untill you start adding more mods or running a lot more boost. If you don't plan on adding cams or spending much time on race gas, then the sm16 is fine and will spool up the quickest.
