Wednesday and Thursday, I plan on pulling the manifolds and then head off my block for a gasket replaecment over the weekend.
I got to thinking today while planning my steps, how the hell do I not get oil and coolant all over the block, turbo, hoses & lines, radiator, and bumper?
My engine is generally very clean and when oil residue gets on stuff it attracts dirt like a magnet.
I mean, the head is full of oil and antifreeze, no? as soon as I crack it off it's going to dump all over.

    my thoughts are:
    a) drain the oil and coolant and blow them out
    b) remove the valve cover with a towel around it
    c) make a towel "runner" leading out of the engine bay and move FAST.

or is there a generally accepted method of not making a mess of my car and the garage floor?

Let stuff drain for a few days if you can. Remove the radiator too.

Go to your nearest walmart/supermarket and get Cardboard from the dumpster area, Lots of it. Its an awesome absorbant. Put it under the engine bay, and something to lay your parts on in order so you know how they came off and go on.

Bite the bullet and just take the parts off. You're gonna make somewhat of a mess.

The oil will be mostly drained out of the head if it sits for a few days.

Drain the rad with the cap off and squeeze the upper hose to make sure you get as much out as possible...thats about the best you can do, short of hooking up a shop vac to the coolant pipe. :D

It shouldn't make too much of a mess after that.
