Hey guys, didnt really know where to put this, so i just threw it under bolt on tech. So heres the deal, i've been buying 6bolt cars cheap and parting them for extra cash recently and decided to just take one and make a track car. so i set a budget of $800 to get into the 13's, and from there try to get into the 12's for another $700. These numbers include the price of the car

this will be nothing other than a track car and streetability doesnt matter to me, as well as emissions(i live in oklahoma). so this will be a running post on my progress with pictures to come later, but i just thought it'd be a fun challenge to give myself

The car chosen for the project is a 92 tsi awd i picked up at an auction for $300 not running. The car already came with a autometer boost gauge and rear sway bar. Took it home and found a fuse off the battery was missing, starter was unplugged, and fuel pump was bad. so i put a 190 walbro in that i had laying around and got her turned over with little trouble. so now i have in my head a list of the cheapest way to reach my goals

free mods---free

joe p mbc
mesh intake
dropped exhaust with custom 3" dump coming off o2 housing
crush bov
$100

from this point im thinking fuel system
maft
660's
datalogger
$600 for used stuff maybe

so that puts me at around 1k spent including price of car so far

then to hit 12's try to grab a clutch caus i know it wont last and turn the boost up
and allowing 150 for misc bs that i know ill run into

last but not least, strip the car of all unwanted weight, all i care to keep are the front seats and steering wheel, maybe a seatbelt:thumb:

for the record, im not bench racing at all, and i know this wont be easy, but i like the challenge and do appreciate any and all advice by others that have attempted similar goals

and project 12's begins

$1500??? I think I could do it for under $450, unless you're trying to keep the car in daily driver condition.

If you aren't too worried about driving the car around, just strip it, get a wet nitrous kit and some jets(100 shot), some free datalogging software, a PDA, retard the timing with the cas, some colder spark plugs, drop the exhaust after the downpipe, and get some c16.

That should easily get you into the 12's. Leave the boost alone and let the nitrous do the work. The race gas, cold plugs and retarding the timing will keep the engine from knocking, but use the datalogger just in case. Stock A/F is pretty rich so with low boost and a wet kit you won't have to worry about needing any extra fuel.

If I had a $300 car that I wanted in the 12's that's what I would do.

1200 dollars

port turbo, manifold, o2 housing- free
gaskets to put everything back on-$30
run open downpipe-free
make your own mbc- $10
660cc- 200 (or less used)
safc -100
strip everything- free
clutch-$400
1g datalogger- real cheap
race gas- don't know
still have another $700..
really cool project btw

You sure as hell dont need 660s or a MAFT to go 12s. You could do it on a 14b with no DP, an MBC, a K&N, a $50 5 knob AFC, 5 gallons of race gas, and some weight reduction. You'll probably want a clutch after the first pass.

I have 2 cars right now..both 91 awd's.

1 I went for the 20g/sidemount/2g mas/eprom/injectors route. Its being put together right now so no numbers...

The other is stock and needs alot of maintenance. Once thats done though, I think Im going to try the nitrous route, to get it going quick.

Its not popular in DSM's but has been popular with the domestic crowd for decades. Relatively cheap horsepower, when you need it. Let the car be a stock car for daily driver duties, then blast down the track.

Its not cheating either. I believe in "run what 'ya brung and hope you brung enough!"

My 2 cents.

Completely gut the car. Look at the Project Goodwill page, do all of the weight reduction that was free. Search here for more weight reduction pages, pull absolutely everything. Get the car into the 2400 pound range-probably can't go lower than that without spending some money.

Port the manifold, turbo, o2 housing. Weld the wastegate flapper shut for your boost control. Run open O2 housing- if the fumes are too much, weld a flange onto a 2.5" pipe long enough to dump them out of the engine bay. >50
Grab a non-turbo FPR at the junkyard. Look to see if the car has an EPROM Ecu. If it does socket it, spend 50 bucks on an Ebay burner and chips, and burn chips to tune your car. If it doesn't, find an SAFC, five knob or original blue screen doesn't matter, just whatever is cheapest and lets you lean it out and gain some timing. Gut your MAF and throw a K&N on it. Buy a used 255. Make your own logger cable, get a cheap palm. Fuel mods are done. 100-250
Buy a feramic or six puck clutch disc and throw it in with the stock pressure plate. 100-150
Run C-16. If you feel spendy buy a 50 dollar plastic race seat to drop another 30 pounds. Spend 100-150 on a 1 gallon fuel cell mounted up front and lines for convenience and more weight loss.

That should get you well into the 12's if not the 11s.

Thanks for all the support guys, I'm trying not to use nitrous and i only need the car to be streetable enough to get to the track and back. Today i have been fighting the starter, been through 3 and still nothing. basically i've turned it over twice and got her fired up. but i cant get it start 99 percent of the time... so here it goes

batterys good, starters good, relay's good, fuse's good....whats left-electrical wiring grimlins...super

so i think what i may do is try to run a push start and just hardwire the starter that way.

I began pulling some of the body panels since i know gutting will be essential for getting this thing into low times cheaply. hopefully by the end of this weekend ill have something for the starter wired up and take her for a spin and check out the trans/clutch.

I'll try to get some pictures posted and keep everybody up to date on project 12's, thanks everyone

Can anyone post a link to the project goodwill page. I tried to look for it but couldnt find it. Thanks for all your help.

The page is down.

The car went 11.5 on a 14b with a total investment of $4,100. I cant recall how much it was to get the car into the 12's. Is this still the 14b record?

after changing out a few starters i finally just used a starter gun and got the engine turning over, but still no fire...

i then checked for spark and found all four to light up, so no problem there

So i put some fuel in the intake tract and turned her over and she lit right up--pretty much what i expected, so i put a new walbro 190 (50$) in the tank and tried again but still have no fuel getting to the rail. so what i think i may do instead of fighting the electrical gremlins is hard wire the pump and put it on a switch

So what i have so far

needs a push button starter wired in the cockpit--easy and cheap
needs a fuel pump hard wire with an on off switch---easy and cheap

once i get the fuel to the rail ill take her for a spin and check the trans, if the clutch is gone i have an extra, but at this point its all about the trans on wether or not i make it to the 12's for under a grand

ill keep everyone updated on what happens this weekend!

hey, i have one more question for you guys, ive been searching and found nothing on the subject, but what are some good budget injectors?? the evo's injectors, but those usually aren't that cheap, and rx7's, but i cant seem to find any, ive heard you can use ford LTD injectors, but i dont know if there's any truth to that at all, so anybody who knows of any bolt in injectors that i could preferable find at junk yards, please let me know, thanks!

alright, so i put the fuel pump on a switch today and got it running, and she fired right up and smoked a little from burning off the junk of sitting for 2 years but it idled around 800rmps after she got to temp. so i took a drive around the block and the clutch has a ton of pressure....a lot more than my 97 gst stock clutch....that may be how they are, but its definatly more than im used to, but to the point, the transmission shifts great, i mean really well. first off 1-3 were pretty much flawless, and reverse went in with no trouble or grinding, so im now past the biggest possible deal breaker with project 12's, so we're good to go!!

status:
300$ for the car
20$ for switches and wire
50$ for the walbro 190

630$ left to get into the twelves......its going to be tough

here are some of the pics of project 12's

Pull that turbo and all those cast peices and port em!!! you could also get a megan 3" dp for cheap.

alright, the last month has been crazy and i havent had much time to spare, but ive about finished straightening the body and cleaning out the interior and wiring all the switches

I think ive finally found an axle, i just have to go pick it up now, but even though i didnt want to use nitrous, ive come across a really good deal on a wet kit and its really tempting me to just run a 50 shot for a little extra something...but the problem is that i dont really have any thing to tune it with or so on, but from what i hear its pretty straight forward and takes care of itself pretty well, but im thinking if i go that route to keep the boost sub 20#s and let the nitrous do the rest, nay sayers chime in, i have no experience with nitrous so it may be a bad idea, i dont know

im going to try to get project 12's track worthy and putting down some times within 2 weeks, or at least as long as school doesnt swamp me im really going to try to get her on the track

I built my cousins Talon for under $1500.At the time he was in highschool and worked in BK.The car ran 12.20s all day it was sickning to watch. One time he made 7 passes all from 12.20-12.23 .We drove it to the track on weekends and he drove it to school everyday. Some of the mods that i remember were.255 fuel pump,afpr,2g mas,560cc injectors, keydiver chip,Big 16g,starion fmic with aluminum ic piping and logger thats what i remember. No fuel computer on the car it all i did was check timing lower and raise fuel pressure and check knock.I should see no problem w/12s for you.

how did those 560's work out for you with no compinsation. You were running larger injectors with a higher base fuel pressure than stock, sounds like a good idea.

wow, didn't see the keydriver chip there, LOL

oops sorry i meant 660cc(Denso).I kept turning up the boost and looked for knock.I believe it was at 21-22psi on c-16 and about 15psi on pump gas.The turbo didnt work any better at higher boost.we put bigger injectors(fic 750cc) in it but car ran like crap.
