I have two questions. 1st is from a 91 TSI FWD. 2nd is from a 94 ES

1. There is an oil leak around the belts. We can't figure out where it is and its kinda leaking a lot. If it sits in one spot theres a pretty decent oil spot the next day. The belts are covered. What can it be?

2. There is a bad sctratching type noise from the belts. It almost sounds like a bad bearing somewhere. It only happens when the car is cold then goes away when it warms up. Also i get this noise as if its an electrical short somewhere. It happens when i slowly get to about 3000 rpms but the goes away shortly afterwords (3400).

These problems are really annoying and we need some help. Takin any suggestions or comments here. Thanks

1. I would say Valve Cover gasket leak, Take off the upper timing belt cover and inspect it for oil leaks. Next would be your oil pump. Its a pain to get to. You need to remove the driver side tire, splash gaurd, Upper engine mount, water pump/power steering pulley, all belts expect Timing/balance shaft belt, underdriver pulley, and then the lower timing belt cover, if it was leaking bad then there would be alot of oil all over the inside of the lower timing belt cover, and all over the gears. There will be some engine grease there, so don't confuse them.

2.The bad scratching noise could be the oil pump. The shorting sound might be water in the top of the valve cover into the spark plug wells, or a damaged wire/coil pack. Probably the later

I dont think that the shorting is from water in the valve covers and im pretty sure my coil pack is good but that may be it. We thought it was one of my injectors haveing a short in it. The noise isnt that loud so idk?

Also are you sure the scratching noise would be my oil pump? Cuz it is a pain in the a** to change and i dont want to change it if i dont have to?

Thanks
