Looking for opinions on por -15 for under the car. Heard it’s supposed to be used on bare metal, but how does it hold up over paint? I’m looking to protect the bottom of my car. I have the subframes out right now, and it would be the perfect time to do some paint work. Thanks! Pictures would be great too!

It does the job very well worth the costs
Not worried about cost tbh. More worried about using the wrong product and having to do it again. For me it’s between the por-15 or Eastwood encapsulator.

I never used por15 over paint but I did some muscle car suspension with it. Hit the control arm with a ball peen and nothing happened. Also used it at work.. I am a retired engineering supervisor for UPS. I had a wall that kept getting damaged by carts so I installed some 4x8 sheets of steel diamond plate and coated it. No scratches after several years. Looked great.

I've used it before, works well but I preferred the finish of and ease of application of Eastwood's chassis paint. I found POR-15 easy to get runs in where the Eastwood is really hard to mess up.

I bought a rear hatch once that was coated with POR 15. It took a while to sand it off. Looking back, I would have been better off using a harsh paint stripper to get rid of it. Why somebody used that on a hatch I'm not sure, but it took serious effort to remove compared to regular automotive paint. I know that doesn't speak much for how it holds up on an undercarriage, but I'd give it a solid rating from that experience. If you have to run a rough grit sandpaper across it for a long time to knock it off, that means it at least bonds well and has a good harness factor.

I'll agree. Por15 is thin but that's fine since it's a brush application.

I've learned with it that it doesn't hold up in the salt which is kind of to be expected. I've also applied it over my already painted spindles and I was able to peel a big chunk off but that was without scuffing or anything. Over all I love the stuff it does work very well thats just my experience with por 15.

POR15 is completely indestructible but what a mess to apply. It runs all over and will get all over your floor, hands, hair, and clothes no matter what you do if you have to apply it upside down under the car (what I had to do). Plan on covering the floor with cloth/tarp and yourself with hat, clothes, and gloves that you will throw away. Some dripped on my skin and hair and never did get it out. It has a strong odor while applying (need ventilation), needs special primers, and is VERY expensive. https://qr.por15.com/QR-assets/downloads/POR15/POR15-Description.pdf

I recently used POR15 on my fuel tank and it turned out great. The application was really easy, prep work (per their instructions) took a bit but wasnt that bad. The mess wasnt an issue for me but I was painting the top of the tank where most of the surface rust was. Im very happy with it post cure, hard as a rock. Worth the cost IMO.

Ive used the eastwood rust encapsulator on front end and some suspension parts. Anecdotal, but I feel like the difference between the two is the hardness of the final cure. In the future, I plan on using Eastwood products for bodywork/paint, and POR15 for things that will see more harsh physical conditions.

Can't speak to the Eastwood since we never used it, but have used POR-15 for years and had great results. One thing to keep in mind is that POR-15 is not designed as a top coat. It needs a protective paint over it in order to hold up in UV light.

I am extremely familiar with por15 and have used it extensively on by builds LOL. The absolute key is prep and application. If you take a look though my current build you will see what I mean. It can easily be scuffed up and painted over for even more protection too, like adding a rubber coat over it. If you have any questions at all just shoot me a DM.

Figured I should add this for clarity:
I used the metal prep and followed instructions, and it took roughly half of the smaller container. After 2 coats of POR-15 cured, I sprayed 3-4 light coats of their top coat and only used 1 can.
