Hey guys, feel like now is the time to start another build thread!
1990 Talon shell with a 4 bolt rear.
I sold off my orange car a roller but kept most of the parts from it. I left the tubular subframe because it was a huge pain in the ass and I'm really wanting to go a different direction with this car. The last one was all out racecar and this one is going to be very OEM but with some nice touches here and there. I've come to appreciate original 90's cars much more and I like this car so much because it still has original parts that I've never even seen before on DSM's. Here are some pictures of it since I've had it (over the last few years.) My friend has owned it since ~2003 and it's been up on the lift at his shop basically since then. So this car has been sitting sheltered for the last 17 years or so. It has some slight road racing history in the early 2000's, but is mostly original.
This is how it has been sitting:

Here it is being transported by my buddy's imported tow truck!

Got rid of the awful wheels and slapped on the old RPF1's for now. Tried fitting my R32 GTR wheels but the hub bore doesn't quite work with the Talon hubs. I thought about milling them but they would not fit my brakes either. The 16's and gunmetal color really looked period style, but I've got something even cooler waiting to go on.

So this isn't a crazy build of any sorts. Really alot of parts are just being swapped over from my old Talon. So not a ton of cool content.
Anyways here's the run down on what parts are going into it.

Engine:
Stock block
Mildly ported head
HKS 272
GSC Springs/Retainers

Suspension: Feal Coilovers from my old car are back on this one. Other than that, nothing yet. Will be going with poly replacements for the rubber bushings, and Moog replacement parts for ball joints, tie rods, etc. I do have tubular rear upper arms for adjustment but really it's pretty stock. Just a refresh.

Wheels:
SSR Integral GT1 17x9 +45
RE71 245/40/17

Super stoked on the wheels. I peruse yahoo japan auctions frequently for my Silvia and am pretty good at finding decent deals. After searching for a few months I finally found two different auctions for pairs of SSR's. Both were pearl white and perfect spec for the talon. They looked a lttle beat to begin with but after a solid clean up I think they are quite nice. Look at the difference on the second picture! Just need a 10mm spacer in the rear and it's perfect fitment. (Ignore the rear wheels. Just wanted to see how they look! GTR Spec Buddy Club P1's)

Something most people haven't seen. Oldschool AEM big brake rotor kit. The car came with brand new rotors still in the bag too! Zinc still looks great on them. Cleaned em up and installed. Wish I had one for the rear. If anyone has some let me know! Would have been cool to cram them in the GTR wheels but just slightly too small.

Holset HX40 and Archer Fab bottom mount manifold. Tial 44mm gate. Will need to make a nice downpipe because atmosphere gate sucks.

Did a quick engine bay refresh before the engine goes in next week.
The paint had little chips all over with primer showing underneath. I considered leaving it since it was original looking and would be much easier, but couldn't help but bust the paint out.

Removed everything I could above the lip on the firewall. Def leaving the firewall mat since I'd say it's kind of rare to see and makes this half ass respray easier. Sanded everything down pretty good and hit it with the paint match. 2k clear on top is amazing! This is the clear coat that has the hardener in the bottom that you have to puncture to mix up. Must wear a REAL respirator. Comes out amazing. I do believe when the exterior paint is detailed and polished it will match the glossiness of the bay. Bolted everything back together and I'd say it looks pretty good! Still had a little overspray on the power steering hose and lower frame runners but it came right off with a good wipe down.

Just waiting on the hardware to come back from zinc coating on Monday and the engine can be timed and put in the car.

Thanks man! Took a while to find a company that would do non commercial parts but finally found one. I used two cans of red and one clear. I had JUST enough clear.
Yea there's a few guys out there who are starting to popularize zinc. I would like to do it on my Silvia as well.

I saw the nose of the Sylvia in one of your pics. You should share that car too :sneaky:. Nice build :thumb:
This is what I consider my main build. Imported 1990 Nissan Silvia with an R33 drivetrain swap. 45k miles on the car. Turbo is essentially an oldschool 30r; it makes 350hp on pump and has incredible response. Idea for the swap was to do it in a way that it looked like it came from the factory that way, and was modified with parts of the time. Still has all A/C, heat, powersteering, interior, etc.

Tried to keep everything period correct and authentic japanese parts. No reps, knock offs, etc. A lot of the cool parts are pretty rare and hard to find, but part of the fun is tracking down and sourcing them.

Got my hardware back from zinc coating! Threw everything into a bucket that I pulled off of the engine and had them done in yellow zinc. Definitely not as shiny as I thought they'd be.. I'm not sure what happened there. Maybe I didn't order correctly, but either way, they still don't look bad for 30 year old bolts. It might even look better like this so it's not as gaudy. Super shiny bolts might look a little out of place in some places. Either way it looks damn good! Here are some pics of the hardware and a few quick pieces I put in place to see how it looked. Some are just extra pieces I threw in since I was having them done.

Yea it's weird. Very dull finish, I was going to try to polish one and see what happens.
Idk not mad about it, really kinda fits the car better like this.

Spent some time in the shop this weekend and got the engine all wrapped up. Went ahead and set it in the car as well! Yes I know it's easier to put the trans in at the same time but I don't have a proper leveler and I was by myself running out of time.

Who did the zinc plating on your hardware? I didnt see a company listed. I really like that dull finish opposed to the bright yellow chromate you usually see.

It was done by Delta Specialty Coating here in Houston Tx. Friendly small company, and one of the few that accepts non-commercial orders.

Just wanna say how much I love this forum.. forgot about the bolt in the back while putting the transmission in tonight and first thread I find has the information from you same guys who are here in my thread! @TK's9d2TSi and @Vegas Smith
Anyways- trans is bolted in. Ran out of time tonight so will come back to it Thursday. Looks nice!

Between having the China virus, a trip to Vegas, Christmas, etc haven’t had a ton of time at the shop. But today it’s looking a lot more like a car! Really finding the differences between the 91 and 90 here.

Was gathering all my parts to swap the shifter and cables and found this after removing the center console.
Somebody took the shifter lever from a 3kgt and welded the top portion of a Dsm lever to the top of it.

Just curious what the intent was here. Was this a poor man’s short shifter back in 2000? Just pretty funny looking. Thought it was a die grinder spanner at first haha

Wow that's so cool, I had no idea they were making them like that! Thanks for the insight. The welds looks pretty bad cosmetically, which is why I thought it was a homebrew thing, but that's pretty cool to have another old school piece like that. I might see if I can keep it and transfer it over with the new shifter base.
