I get this noise above 25 mph coming from my speedometer. It sounds like paper tearing/sandpaper sanding something. It comes in pulses like ssss ssss ssss, not a steady frequency like ssssssssssss and gets faster as the car goes faster. Another strange thing I noticed is that my speedometer needle used to shake and wobble quite it a bit but it never made any noise. Now, my speedometer needle is steady as a rock but it makes this annoying noise. Randomly it will start shaking and stop making noise for a few seconds but it's usually steady and makes that weird sound.

I thought it was the cable but I see no way of lubricating it easily and I'm not going to take it out unless I know it's the cable. I think it will require removing the entire dashboard, which I can do if absolutely necessary, but I'd rather avoid it. I took off my gauge cluster today and tried to see if it was coming from the speedometer itself but I couldn't tell.

If anybody knows what this sound is or how to figure out which part is causing it please chime in. If I can't fix it soon I'm just going to unscrew the speedometer cable from the tranny.

Where do you put the liquid graphite? On the back of the cluster where the cable hooks in? Mine is making the same noise. Kinda a squeaky grindy noise on mine, but it is REALLY annoying. Anyone got a link on how the cluster comes out. I haven't even looked yet. Is it real simple?

Yes and yes. Spray it where the cable goes into the cluster. And the cluster is preatty easy to take out.
