Last week i got a old, beat up Eagle Talon TSi(see my pic LOL), I got a few questions i hope some people can answer for me.

Periodically my engine makes a ticking noise that sounds like its coming from the valve cover, happens every once in a while, and i have no idea what it is.

Another problem is my tranny is stuck in third, i need my solenoids replaces. The reason im saying this is to go with my next question

It seems my turbo only spools to a little over 7 psi, could this b cause my tranny is bad and i cant get to a high enough rpm rang or cause there is something wrong with the turbo

and my last question is how much hp can a completely stock engine handle? I plan on making a few mods in the summer but not over doing it, but i dont want to over power the engine, so how much can it handle before a rebuild to handle more? I read like 500 on some other sites but i want to be sure

Please and thank you to any one who can helpROFL

Well, it sounds like you have a lot to learn.:| But, this is the right place to do that.:) You'll need to take your time and do it right, starting with maintenence first. If it were mine I would get it running good the way it is before you get into modifying it in any way. And don't expect to just be able to jump right in and get 500hp out of the car with little or no effort. It just don't happen like that.:( Yes, it CAN be done, but it isn't easy or cheap.

As far as the ticking it's probably lifter tick. It also could be that it's low on oil too as these cars like to tick if they're low at all. You can read more here http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...-gen-generation-3g.html?highlight=lifter+tick, or do a search for lifter tick and you'll get all kinds of reading.

I would do a boost leak test to see where you're at on that and see if that fixes your transmission/boost problem. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...ester-merged.html?highlight=boost+leak+tester

This is a great source for questions that you might have that have already been answered too. 1000 Already Answered Questions - Index page

And finally here's a guide to basic horsepower upgrades.:D Tech Guide: 1G 4G63t Upgrades - DSMtuners

Good luck and happy reading!:thumb:

thanks, i was planning on getting everything mechanically done before i start building. but money for me is limited an i am still unemployed. Im getting the tranny fixed hopefully this week then i want to get the timing belt replaced, and what ever other problem finished. I don't plan on putting 500 hp LOL that jus what i heard, i was just thinking a new exhaust and a better turbo but nothing to much more, its my dd and i don't need 500hp to get back and forth to school.

Trans stuck in 3rd gear indicates limp mode. Usual culprit is your TCU. They are known for failing. You CAN check the solenoids by powering each one and forcing the trans into a certain gear by energizing certain solenoids. I would try this first as it's easier and less time consuming than pulling the TCU. But my money is still on the TCU.

LOL Okay, cool. I just didn't want you to think this car can do the impossible with next to nothing and have you get your hopes up only to be doomed for failure. (I've seen it happen too many times) I think you've got the right idea though. Do maintenance first and take you're time and you'll be okay. Good luck!:thumb:

Can I ask what you paid for that sexy 1g?How many miles are on it?

+1 on the tcu is shot..Check your local junk yards for another auto and get another tcu..

An lifter tick is probly what your hearing..

welcome to the site. i love that color. looks like all your questions have been answered 1) lifter tick 2) bad tcu

ok thanks all and i talked to the transmission shop guy he told me it was the solenoids. I dont know to much about car. Problem is i already went to the junk yard to look for a few body parts and inside panels but there was not a single 1g:( there was one 2g but it was completely wrecked and everything that was good was already stripped, but i mean is was totaled. the engine was smashed and the turbo was still hanging there crushed in, the top was even peeled back, there was a carbon fiber hood that was shriveled like paper, i wanted to cry. But yea the yards by me dont have one.

And to answer further questions, my 1g was FREE!:) yes my mom bf got a 2005 celica GT-s and gave me his old Talon, it has 160k on the car but the motor has 100k( used motor was put in a few years ago) i want to get the tranny fixed then replace the timing belt, my moms bf THINKS they but a new one in 20k miles ago when they installed the new engine, but i just want assurance. Rather pay for a new one then a new motor. There is a few scratches and two small rust spots in the front by the light and back wheel well, but a guy at autozone told me a body shop will charge less than 100$ to repair them. I want to throw a body kit on is cause the front bumper is torn off, but nothing to much i dont want to rice (i live around v-tecs and i HATE them!) but i was about to buy a 2003 dodge neon befor i found out i was getting the DSM, when he told me i can have it it flipped! as far as i know i got the only turbo awd in my part of the city, i seen others but n/t. a few of my tuner friends envy me cause i got it

also if anybody know what color is my Talon. LOL the label by the engine is completely worn and i cant read it

SO how about selling me the talon and buying that neon..I'm just kidding unless you would sell the talon..

But ahh get the solonoids done and see if that does the trick, otherwise it's the tcu ....

naw i love it even if i dont got fast until i get about 35 LOL, but how much would that tcu cost to get and replace, and neons are crap there only good for gas mileage, unless its the srt4

Sometimes tcu's are hard to come by so you could be looking at 150, but who knows maybe more maybe less depending on whos selling....I wish I had an extra one, but I don't

does anyone know how much exactly it would cost to have the timming belt replaced? i read the maintenance manual post and it had a long list of stuff to do when you get the belt replaced so how much am i looking at?

Welcome aboard.

does anyone know how much exactly it would cost to have the timming belt replaced? i read the maintenance manual post and it had a long list of stuff to do when you get the belt replaced so how much am i looking at?

Would you be doing it yourself? Or having a shop do it?

YOu said the belt was done 20k ago..Unless u really want it changed dont worry about it..I've never had to replace mine yet sorry..

I'm guessing hes gonna have a shop do it..

yea im looking at a shop to do it, i dont know that much about car:( but read on a auto review site that the timing belts are pron to snap if not changed regualalry on my model

if you notice, all experienced DSMers on here will tell you its all about maintenance.

Our cars can make big power, but if people do not stay on top on the maintenance then they are going to ruin their cars. It is the single most reason dsm break down.

DGajre777:

Maintenance Schedule
There are a lot of threads on mods and upgrades, but it is very important to make sure that all the maintenance is done on your car. Check your repair manual for the complete list, here is the minimum list that I recommend:

Every week or every 250 miles or when you get gas/fuel:
1) Check engine oil level
2) Check brake fuild level
3) Check tires and tire pressures

Every 3000 miles or 3 months
1) Change engine oil and oil filter
- The most commonly used oil is synthetic 10W30, 10W40 and 15W50.

Every 6000 miles or 6 months
1) Rotate tires

Every 15000 miles or 12 months
1) Change PCV valve. (When you buy it, blow on one end and then blow on another, you should only be able to blow one side. If you can blow on both sides, it is bad, get another one)
2) Change spark plugs
- If you have no or mild mods get - NGK BPR6ES or Autolite 63 Copper
- If you have moderate mods get - NGK BPR7ES or Autolite 62 Copper
- If you have a LOT of mods get - NGK BPR8ES
Gap plugs to 0.028 to 0.031". Use no other plugs. No platinum or dual electrode stuff.

Every 30000 miles or 24 months
1) Replace air filter
2) Spark plug wires - (I use NGK premium wires: part# ME77, stock# 8100)
3) Coolant flush - 50/50 (with one or 2 bottles of water wetter if you want to use it)
4) Change the tranny fluid - most commonly used on manual transmissions is Pennzoil Synchromesh, which is a cheaper alternative to BG Synchroshift. After having issues with Synchomesh for a while (it is too thin), I switched to a combo of Redline heavy and light.
5) Change the transfer case and rear diff fluid (if you have AWD) - most commonly used gear oil is Redline Heavy Shockproof gear oil.

Every 60000 or 48 months
1) Replace fuel filter
2) Timing belt change: A complete list of 60k timing belt service would include all these:
- Timing belt
- Balance shaft belt
- Timing Tensioner
- Water pump
- Timing belt tensioner pulley
- Balance shaft tensioner pulley
- Idler pulley
- Crank seal
- Oil pump seal
- Balance shaft seal
- 2 Cam seals
- Harmonic balancer
- All other belts
Get only MITSUBISHI parts for the list above. OEM part does not always mean that the part is made by MITSUBISHI. If you don't know where to but parts from, this is a good start - Where Can I Buy OEM Parts Besides Junkyards and Ebay? - DSM Forums.

If your car is old, go ahead and replace all the vacuum hoses. RRE makes a good kit here - RRE's Larson Silicone Hose Kit

If anyone wants to add to this list, feel free. I hope this helps someone.

how much does all this cost? i dont have that much money

It's not the cost of the parts that is going to kill you. It's the labor. Becuase shops charge out the ass.

Check out Rockauto.com for the prices on all that shit. They are fairly cheap. Some people will say only buy OEM, but I've never had a problem using non-OEM parts.

Congratulations on your new car. Be prepared for it to nickle and dime you for a year or two getting it back into shape. I bought mine for $1,000, but $1,000 into it and still need to get the top end rebuilt.

And most importantly remember that a car will run forever as long as you keep replacing parts!

LOL well we got a decent mech that is the cousin of my friends mom, so we dont get charged to much but i would imagine it would b a boat load still, the belt didnt get changed 20k ago the engine did an idk if they put a new belt or not so i dont want to take chances. I just dont want it to snap and destroy my engine. I already put 300 in for new sparkplugs, wires, and coils, going to spend another 300 at least to get that tranny fixed(in the shop now) and i want to get my timing belt replaced before i start building. I still get the tick every so often, my oil is fine i changed it a few days ago and its a little over full, but not to much, but the oil is fine. so what else might it be? my oil pressure gage is broke so idk of the oil pressure is normal or not.

The holes in the stock lifters are small so when gunk builds up in them they start ticking. You can buy a set of revised lifters.

is it expansieve to get done at a shop or easy enough to do my self? i have little exp with engine work, but do know some. Also is it a hge problem that should b fixed right away, dont have to much cash and im about to fork out allot for tranny:(
