Hi My name is Traveler and I just bought a 1996 Toyota 4 runner SR-5
Problem: I need to pass the California smog test and based on everything I read it looks nearly impossible. i'm getting freaked out about that.
Things I have done to SUV since I bought it 2 weeks ago: new battery, new air filter, new PCV, cleaned the Mass Air Flow with CRS MAF cleaner, replaced the spark plugs, ran Cataclean(name brand engine cleaner) thru fuel system and drove for 30 miles, changed the oil and oil filter with 10W-40.
I will be running Lucas "deep clean" fuel treatment thru system and driving it for 3 + hours at 55 mph. Then refilling the gas tank with 87 octane. Will be filling tires to the upper limit of air pressure just before the test. Will be going on a cool temp morning, without any rain.
Right now the hot idle is aprox 750-800 rpm. SUV seems to run perfectly, and no VISIBLE emissions. Ne engine leaks.
Worried that I have erased the computer history when I changed battery.
Does anyone think I have any chance of passing the California smog test ?
Thank you for any advice you may offer.

Pour a gallon of paint thinner in the tank the day of the test, your monitors should set after a week or two of drive cycles if you don't disconnect the battery during that time.

Typo above. SHOULD READ NO ENGINE LEAKS

Are you being serious about the paint cleaner or is this a joke on a newbie? In my 54 years of driving I never ever heard of anything like that.

I'm being serious, it burns cleaner with less emissions than gasoline which is fossil fuel based, a little e85 could work also, just not too much.

Thank you motomattx for your suggestion. I'll have to give that a great deal of thought. I'd hate to blow my engine. Or burn up the gaskets/seal etc.
I just looked at some more videos on how to pass California smog test and one mechanic claimed that the catalytic converter must be working at a minimum of 95 % efficiency. Bummer.

No problem. Not sure how or what exactly CA checks, but you reset all your monitors when you replaced the battery. The only way to have them complete again is to drive it and some have a certain number of key cycles also. Back in the day in NJ, you were fine with two incomplete.

Best of luck and hope you pass
