ok, so i dropped my car off at my mechanic before i went on vacation. i get back, and give him a call. he went ahead and did the brakes for me, but not the timing belt. he is afraid that if he fixes the timing, and has that running at full potential, that my exhaust leak(in manifold) will cause some problems with the valves.

i should point out that this is a 1991 Talon TSi AWD. (all stock)

he wanted to charge me 375 for a new manifold(he thought it was another 91 model's) installed. i asked him how long i had to drive the car as is, so i can find another manifold, or at least try...(he said bring it back before 4 months, because by then he thinks ill need a new timing belt, so therefore the exhaust manifold also.)

he really is a good mechanic and has saved us a lot of money... i dont do much on my own... im not very good at working on cars.. so i get the parts for my mechanic...

so thats what im here for. i want to get either the ported 2g or ported evo III.
i want to know what you guys think is better, and i'll need to know what to have for him to install it.

he told me to make sure i get the gasket, but im not sure if their might be anything else. i don't really need major performance, but i wont complain...

i read through other peoples request for info on this, and decided id make my own comment. some threads seemed to be all for evo and others all for 2g... ill see wich way this goes, and follow that.

thanx a lot for any comment in advance. you guys are great help.

Well, the Evo III is just as big stock as a ported 2G is. If you have the money, buy the evo, the runners are designed to focus the exhaust pulses more directly at the turbo.

Get the EVO. It's not that much more money and the flow is much better than the 2g, plus it's thicker where it counts for porting.

ok, so you guys are leaning me toward the evo... now where should i get it from?

i saw that someone suggested slowboyracing.com in another thread, and the evo is only 10 more($190).

or maybe there is a place around me that i can save on shipping. i live around cincinatti and dayton ohio, but would be willing to go as far as columbus to pick this up...

thanks so far and thanks in advance again..

You're not going to find too many places with a better price than Slowboy. I think the best I've ever seen for a new one was $185 from CTC Motorsports, but I've never delt with them so I don't know about reliability. If you order from Slowboy, you will get what you wanted as soon as he can get it to you. I know they are having a little trouble right now with their supplier of EVOs, but they should have some in later this week or next and they charge next to nothing for shipping.

awesome, thanks a lot.

ill inquire about shipping, so i know how much i need to have for this.

(it sucks not having a credit card and having to pay my mom upfront before she orders something for me...)

and by the way, while my car was parked at the mechanics, somehow or other the passenger side mirror had the sh!t beat out of it. since it happened while there, my mechanic is going to get me another part and put it all back for free, but untill then, i don't have a view of anything on that side and my car looks like shit.. sorry, had to vent...

thank you again for the info

ok, should have done this in my last reply, but it just occorred to me...

now that i am ready to order the part (evo manifold from slowboyracing.com)

what else might i need to put this on my car? will it just fit?(hah) how much will extra pieces cost and where do i find them?
im sorry that i do not know very much about this, but i do learn from what you guys tell me...

thanks yet again

where can i find either of these? how much?

i found several exhaust manifold gaskets on autozone.com for around $13, and i think i found the turbo gasket at napa.com(25) its a gasket set. ill take a trip there and ask about it after i get out of school today

thank you

another point i didnt realize till i got home just now... do i want to get the gaskets for my car or for an evo ???

im not sure why im so hurried to get this done, ive got time, but i think now that i know i have a time limit, i want to get it done before its too late...

sorry for my incompetence level
thanks for your patience

The mating surfaces of the EVO and the T/E/L are the same since they both use the same engine. Just get the ones for your car.

i go through road race, but slow boy works fine i guess. i am getting my ported evo mani this coming week. it is a really easy install. 8 bolts holding the mani to the block and 4 holding the mani to the turbo.
all you need is a 12mm swivel socket and a 14mm regular and a breaker bar. losten the turbo from the mani with the 14mm, then use the 12mm swivel to get to the bolts holding the mani to the block. the whole thing from start to finish should take you about an hour. its not a messy install either, as you arent dealing with any fluids...good luck whichever route you choose!

Brian

ok, thanks for the install tips

but im more worried about wether or not it needs to be ported to fit my car...

i've searched google whenever im on at home looking for info, but dialup is a real pain in the ass...

i get yelled at every time i try to find something at school, so its easiest trying to get the information out of this site, and have some patience. the problem is im not being patient...

but to clarify my question...

does a Evo exhaust manifold from slowboyracing.com need to be ported to fit on a 91 talon?

thanks again...

-update-*

i did a quick search for the retailer you mentioned and i did get this from their site.
"
EVO Exhaust Manifold:
These have the same runner diameter as the 2G exhaust manifolds but they have the larger collector that matches the larger inlet to a 16G with a 7cm exhaust housing. They do savea lot of time porting however. They are a direct bolt on for a 2G, they require the same slight trimming on one corner when used on a 1G to clear the P/S bracket as a 2G manifold would need. We also have the factory sealing rings to fit the 7cm size opening. This gives the gasket some protection if you leave the step there on the manifold and the turbo._
"

ok, so it does need ported to fit on my car. now, what might this entail.

im very sorry that i need to ask so many questions, i have to be getting on somebody's nerves... at least with how often i say 'thank you'...

Just get the EVO and bolt it on, it doesn't "need" to be ported to fit because it is already considerably larger than stock. You could have it ported if you wanted it to flow even more.

ok, thanks a lot.

that makes me feel a lot better, because i already don't want to pay to have this done, but my mom doesnt think me or anyone i know should do it, she wants our mechanic to, so whatever. hes getting senile and forgetful, so i want to make this as easy as possible for him to do.

btw he is a huge fan of DSM's but for some weird insurance reason or something he never gets to own one to fix up. (i dont follow, like i said, hes senile.. luckily he's more of a knowledge base for the other workers...)

on another note, more and more i felt like my car had a baaaad turbo lag, and i was cleaning out my car since its friday, and i found three 12mm bolts in an ash tray, so i popped the hood to see my heat sheilding cockeyed on the exhaust manifold. holy. sh!t. i took a picture of it. i didnt think the 'crack' was this bad. the thing is more-so split into thirds...
so anyway, i put that back on and now the boost guage goes up as it should(seemed to go right up whenever gas was touched, and i heard a constant hisssss) and i got some more power back. thats nice. i can't wait to get this fixed now. and to think ive been driving this thing with sh!tty exhaust pressure backing the turbo.... now i feel even more sorry for my brothers friend...(he drives a mustang...98, GT, and is jealous.. and he payed 12x what i did..)

thanks again for all the info you guys.
take it easy

(yes from now on im checking under the hood whenever i get my car back from anywhere)

actually. i think i misunderstand the meaning of ported. does it need to be trimmed at all to fit?

i found a site that talked about trimming a corner of the 2g to fit a 1g, but i dont know if that is necesarry for the evo...

it talks about grinding away the lower right edge of the flange (using the gasket line for a guide...) id post the link, but http://notepad.yahoo.com/ wont load on my f!cking dialup...

finally... only took 10 minutes.

sorry for my gross incompetence...

ok, thank you. thats the clarification i was looking for.

so, my next question is, am i ready to order? i mention dsmtuners.com on the order form, and ask about trimming. (if they don't do that, i found out my cousin can, he owns a machine shop and they make iron railing for malls) in that case, just what IS an exhaust manifold made out of? from what i understand its cast iron.. i could very well be wrong. ok nevermind, found this. ( http://www.innerauto.com/innerauto/text/exha07.html )

i think thats about all of the annoying questions i have for now.

thanks again

i am starting to get the parts i need, and i am having trouble finding turbo gasket. i visited all the area parts stores, but none of them have this. they did know what i was talking about, but they couldnt find it listed at all for my car.

it would be helpful if anyone could get me this part #. also, on this site (http://www.plymouthlaser.com/sale.htm ) what is a 13G gasket? is that comperable to my stock turbo? would it fit? listed on above link as ( Turbo Gasket for a 13G turbo. $5.00 )

The 13g one will not work. That is the turbo that is on the 1G automatic tranny car. the inlet is a lot smaller than the one on your car. You do have a 5spd right?

yeah, mine is a 5 spd. thanks for the clarification there. what is my stock turbo? is that a 14b? i read that somewhere, just wanted to make sure...

TurboTerror - since your the one who originally told me to get the turbo/manifold gasket, i was wondering if you might know the part number on that... and i really hate to show just how retarded i am, but all i can find on napa's site is item ( NGAGS33311 ) <a href = "http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/NAPAonline/search_results_product_detail.d2w/report?prrfnbr=15592773&prmenbr=5806&usrcommgrpid=46803605" > link probably wont work </a> i suppose if i had to get the entire set, that i could just remount the turbo and get a good seal out of it, right?

well, either way, thanks for all the help up to this point. and of course, thanks in advance for any further advice.
