Let's just get some general ground rules down:

Any modern "trance" songs done by anyone who has DJ in their name is going to be a crappy, sappy, pop tune going under the guise of Trance. This goes for Tiesto, Oakenfold, any of those "Big name" super DJ's. The only one I can think of off hand is Mikk Van Jick or however you spell it, but that's going more for a tech-trance (Which is what TRANCE USED TO BE BEFORE ROBERT MILES ARRRGH)

A few Best CD's of all Time for me, and I've been into "electronic" music for about 8 years now:

Underworld - Everything Everything (Their last album, quite possibly the best proof that DJ's are incredibly overrated, and that synthesizers can still be used live)
808 State - Goregeous (From 1991, still an excellent album)
Photek - Form and Function (Best Photek Album to date, UFO/Seven Samurai probably the best Drum and Bass ever made versus the crap that's put out by 15 year old bedroom DJ's these days)

Other excellent names out there:

Tristan - Goa/Psy
Hallucinogen - Goa/Psy
EZ Rollers - Breakbeat
Wreckage Inc. -Breakbeat
Depeche Mode - Kinda cute, Kinda quirky, will get you girls occasionally if you like smarty pants writer types. Their last album blew goats.
Josh Wink - Acid (Higher state of Conciousness will destroy you)
Future Sound of London - Just good.
Bamboo Forest - More Psytrance
DJ Misjah/DJ Tim - Access| What trance is SUPPOSED to be.
Hardfloor - Acid

Etc etc etc. Just buy a bunch of european compilations and find out what you like.

I used to DJ for two years and stopped only to produce my own music, so sometimes I like to think what I'm talking about.

thanks for all the responses, ill DL a bunch of different stuff you guys named and see what i like.

What about more trance/rave music? Out of all the techno that I do D/L only half turns out any good. I want the music you hear in the techno/rolling clubs that people trip to. Any help on that or basically same?

i like a lot of the ministry of sound stuff, some really neat techno. i've been into moby kind of on and off over the last couple of years. front 242 is good if you like the industrial stuff, there are lots of good industrial groups.
SUN project is very cool if you like goa stuff
chemical brothers have some cool stuff, but i've only listened to surrender (borrowed from a friend)
robert miles does some neat stuff too (got dreamland from the library)
hit up your local library if they check out cd's, you can find some really amazing things that you don't see in stores

You're just a beginner.

For techno all you need to know are two words: Oliver Adams
This guy invented techno as far as I'm concerned. The best techno comes from Belgium, everyone else is just a copycat.

For trance all you need to know are two words: Astral Projection
These guys are the best IMHO. You might not like them but I don't give a flying fluck.

That is about the only thing I'll agree with! JOSH WINK is tha man!
as far as TECHNO music goes .... well it has became the same as all music genre ....... COMERCIALIZED BS .... crap!
The 15 year basement DJs are the ONLY ones putting out any good beats these days! Most of them have progressed into laying their own tracks and/or remixing the oldskool!
I will have to say though that it really depends on where you live as to what gets played and what is hot and what is not!

AND ONE LAST THING ........ ICEY OWNS ALL!!!!!

Okay, Im just going to give one good song, and then let you guys get back to the talking, as I know jack about trance/techno. But Im a huge fan of JFK "whiplash".

o.k. .......... I realized I didn't leave any examples, try to search for some of these!!!
1. ICEY (of course)
2. Baby Anne
3. DJ FBI, CIA, DEA (doesn't mattter which one)
4. Sharraz
5. Rick West
6. CottonClub (I think its spelled with a K)
7. Dj X
And so many many many more, I just have to wait until I get home to get the others!!!!
I have about 25 crates of records ..... so I'll poke through some later ...
AND I still have my Tables for sale!!! $200 takes all ..

So I guess Detroit and Mr. Atkins never existed? Or do you consider "James Brown Is Dead" as the epitome of it all?

Germany > * if only because they spawned Kraftwerk, as well as Tangerine Dream. And Techno wouldn't be what it is today without Kraftwerk.

Astral Projection is pretty good, but I like Hallucinogen better if only for Millooney-um.

And you're joking about bedroom DJ's unless you consider recycled FRUITY LOOPS crap to be "PHAT BEATZ" or listening to a bunch of bad immitations of anthem trance on a hand-me-down MC303.

Or maybe I'm just tired of slewing through every wannabe-Oakenfold/Wannabe Richard D James out there.

i might get flamed for this but i have found that i like alot of stuff from paul oakenfold and darude. I like DJ Shadow but his isn't really techno. I don't know what he is considered

not really heard very many others who had heard them, but 666 has good techno. some people might want to try and download one of there songs, and see how they like.

very wide range of artists here, ive been DLing random stuff from random artists. found some decent stuff nothing ive fell in love with yet. could my problem possibly be kazaa? is there a better place to get music or should i just look for compilation CDs? but then if its all crap u just wasted 10$ ya know

check out Paul Oakenfold, Paul van Dyk, DJ Irish, Trance Control, Tunnel Trance Force, DJ Mystic, DJ Tiesto, Crystal Method, Seb Fontaine, Pete Tong, Orion Too, DJ Icey, DJ Baby Anne, and Prodigy. My personal faves are definetly Oakenfold, Irish, and Van Dyk. If you have a broadband connection, check out shoutcast.com and go to Digitally Imported Euro-Trance, or i think its www.DI.fm they have alot of trance that i like, just to chill to, of if you have XM radio, i think its station 86 ;) hope that helped a little. I am by no means a master, but ive made some original shit, and ive been into this kinda music for 4 or 5 years now, and have over 20gb here on my PC :D good luck, peace

dj shadow is trip hop. Forget trance!!! aaaccckk the last thing we need is more bt and oakenfold alias'. Download some 'jungle' or drum n bass. Dj Craze, dieselboy, danny the wildchild, roni size, dj hype, freaky flow, or anything from the uk. It sounds soo much better coming out of ur system and it's not spoonfeed like trance.

does someone have a link to something that explains all the differences between trip-hop/trance/techno/whatever else? I hear people talking about the different genres, but not being experienced in that area I don't really know what the differences are. To me it's all simply techno.

beats, rhythm.... so hard to explain without listening...

here is a way i guess.

if electronica was considered all music...

trance/GOA would be the classical side.
jungle/triphop/2-step/drum and bass would be the hiphop/r&b/rap side.
breakbeats would be old school rap and some rock.
nrg would be the rock side.
most house/disco house/funky house would be the dance/disco side.
latino house would be considered salsa/mariachi
most hardcore/UK hard house/gabber would be the metal rock side.
happy hardcore/happy house/eurotrance/euro pop would be the 80's pop side.
techno (this is a genre all by itself, alot of people dont know that.) would be considered the band you had in high school. a bunch of noise thrown together.

any others that you can think of?
