Im pretty new to this whole car building stuff but I love it, its like playing with really big lego pieces. Anyways, I have a 96 Eclipse GS and I plan on doing a complete upgrade to my engine performance and everything. Like:

Cold Air Intake
Cat-back exhaust
High Flow Cat
Exhaust Headers
Camshafts and Cam Gears
Under drive Pulleys
Cylinder Head Porting

And looking it up on this site, I found some things I didnt know about.

Bored-out Throttle Body
Ported Intake Manifold
Air/Fuel Controller
Ignition Timing Controller

Just a couple questions:

What are some good manifactures for the parts? Like I said, Im really new. Money isnt too much of a problem, but I just dont want to get jipped.

And are these mods good for only HP or torque also. Im looking for HP and torque, but I was told torque is what gets you off the line faster. Is that right?

Any information is welcome. Please no negative comments instead, please list an alternate idea maybe. Thanks

aem or unorthodox racing - cam gears
crower - cams
afx - underdrive crank pulley

you dont need an a/f controller. you dont need an igntion timing controller unless you are over 500hp. the rest of parts don't really have a spcific company which is better, they are all about the same in my opinion. the mods are good for both torque and hp.

with all the stuff you have listed, you might as well go turbo ;). its a lot more fun.

If and when I get a turbo, do I have to change alot of this stuff to meet the turbos needs? I see a lot of parts that are for turbo cars and the same part for n/t. And what is a good turbo to go for?

Well put, and I have to agree. Hahn offers great support with both thier 420a kits and thier 4g63 kits. Heck sometimes Bill or Len will work tech support and answer questions.

If you are referring to the 4G63 kit and the 420a kit then the difference is one kit is for turbo cars and the other is for non-turbo cars who are adding a turbo.

4G63 referres to the motor in a GST or GSX
420a referres to the motor in a RS or GS

You will want the same Kit siueclipse has. There are a few companies that make those kits for your car. The two most popular are Hahn and Star. While on average times with the star kit tend to be a little faster, I would recommend the Hahn kit to you if you do not have much expierience with this stuff. Hahn has a support team that is really good and will answer any questions you might have.

Yeah, brakes are not a 100% necessity. If you want for now get really good brake pads. I use EBC Reds but you could use thier Green series pads and be OK. They run about 75 bucks for the front but they are worth it. If your rotors start to warp you might want to consider a slotted rotor.

i wanted to get new rotors, those are the ones that have holes in them right? A guy i know says he gots some like that in his Vette, and that he can almost stop on a dime. Brakes seem to be a little expensive too, and i need like $4,000 for that tubo and FMIC, so whats a good brake brand?

No, slotted rotors have the "lines" in them. Your thinking of drilled rotors. EBC is a great brand of brake pads.

Ok, so i have the cold air intake for the time being, and i got new headers and getting a new cat and cat-back exhaust. I was told that there are things between the intake and the exhaust that need to have bigger area of flow. I dont remember what they were or what exactly the dude was talking about, could someone help me out?

Also, for boring and porting and polishing, do i have to take the car to a special shop for it, or what should i look for?

sorry for so many questions, but this site is a great source of info, and i want to try to learn as much as possible.

Im no expert at performance but say if I were to put a star stage 2 kit under the hood, how much can I expect the mechanics to ask for installation fee? Anyone know? Thank you much for the reply.

depending on the shop and how much work you do yourself before you take it there..ie mounting the intercooler or installing the guages..guestimating at least 300-400

Doh! why do the headers need to be removed? what do i have to put in its place, the stock ones, or special super-duper turbo headers?

why is that? what would happen if there were aftermarket headers? loss of performance?

the tubing design. The new turbo mani won't match up to most aftermarket header piping. You have to cut the piping on your old mani and clamp the old piping to the new turbo manifold. I believe that HRC has the install instructions on their website..it should give you a clear picture of what would go and what would stay

errr no.. it comes with a new manifold.. and no you dont use the stock one like you mentioned above..

siueclipse, what turbo kit do you have in? and what other performance parts do you have? did you run into any problems with them?

I know that it comes with a new manifold, I was just trying to explain to the other guy why he couldn't use a header and how you would use the the stock piping to create the downpipe. True I may not have done the best job..thus the referance to the install instructions.

hahn stage 2 with fmic + 310cc injectors

i have had no problems except one big one, i cracked a piston! it was my fault really.. i didn't let my car cool down after about 30 runs at the track then prooceeded to run at 130mph down the highway. it didn't like that too much

right now im adding a whole bunch of stuff. im boring the motor 20 over, je pistons, eagle rods, cam gears, pulley set, under drive crank pulley, motor mounts, LSD, bigger injectors

keep in mind that when you go turbo, its not.. will your engine last, but its how long will it last. im recommending to people that they first spend the money to build the motor before they go turbo. or at least they start saving for a rebuild after they put on a turbo kit, because more than likely you will break something. i ran 6 months till i popped mine.
