I’ve found that stretching out the spending keeps things under the radar, or perhaps just isn’t worth arguing. When I need to spend significant amounts at one time (rebuild trans), I start talking about it a few months out. Then it gets old and when it show up on the account, there’s not much left to argue over. A few times a year I’m asked what my “budget is” for the car (and also for the truck, sort of). Fortunately my boss at work just got an $11,000 estimate because he left his truck in 4-hi for about 700 miles, and that was an effective counterpoint to me spending 300 on a 90 amp eastwood mig, timing light and compression gauge. Takes at least as much skill and focus as lovemaking, and one can influence the other.

The way is to live beneath your means and find yourself a partner who wants you to be happy and doesn’t give a f*ck what you spend on the cars as long as it doesn’t take food from their mouths or your kids mouths.

I will never understand this every single time I hear it. This is not okay. This is not a healthy relationship to have someone in your ear chewing you out because you spent your own money on something that makes you happy. Are your bills paid? Kids fed? Plenty of money left for food? Then there’s literally no reason to complain. At all. If they don’t understand that, find someone who does.

If you ARE buying car parts instead of feeding your family though, then yeah. That deserves a verbal pimp slap.

But seriously. I could drop $16,000 tomorrow on the talon and as long as it wasn’t money specifically set aside for something else, and it wasn’t going to put us in a bad spot, my wife wouldn’t care at all. She’d smile and shake her head because I’d be grinning like an idiot all excited for my parts or my video games or my tuning software, or whatever. She’s been that way since she was my girlfriend. Still that way now almost 15 years later.

Seriously people. Stop accepting abuse. That’s what it is.

You are probably a lucky rarity. Reality is people have different opinions on what extra/luxury money looks like. You didn’t mention retirement plans, insurances, etc. Some of us would need a million in the accounts for ours to be okay with that type of spending on toys and not bi***. Be thankful and show her.

Holy $h!t guys I don’t know where to start LOL, my wife has HATED my car since 2013. The year I bought it. It’s insane to see it in the driveway now with THOUSANDS under the hood, but again I agree with stretching the spending, I myself have a mortgage and 2 kids, they come 1st. I basically bought parts for the 2 year build when I could, never let the family go without, you simply buy what you can when you can:D. A real man doesn’t ask permission, he asks FORGIVENESS LOL, but seriously tho my wife always came around eventually after I explained myself, sometimes you just have to get a little creative LOL

I have preached this ^^^ for as long as I can remember, long before we even thought that girls maybe didnt have cooties after all, but yeah its YOUR money if you earned it, as long as you have contributed to your responsibilities then its your life and your funds man, just because you decide to share your life with someone does NOT mean that you give up on your own dreams or your own life, relationships exist to enhance your life in a positive way, if thats not happening even for a little while then its certainly time to rethink your reason for sharing your life with that person and when I say that I am talking about any relationship, friend, girlfriend, boyfriend, acquaintance, any of them, if they dont bring something to the table then its time for them to generally go, this is my truth, my belief and therefore my reality.

What??? why? why would anyone want to live with someone that feels that way? what kind of living is that? I mean I guess there's a lid for every trash can but yeah, that wouldn't ever play with me.

we did but heads initially when i told her that i was going to get the car from my dads after 6 years and that it was going in the garage of our new house LOL

I was married for 28 years. My wife was always understanding of my car fetish. Bless her heart. I asked her if I could buy a boat one day. Nice, big, twin engine, cabin...all the bells and whistles. She told me as long as I had the extra $ to make the payments, I could do it, since she was back in school learning her profession of imaging in the medical field. Our bill's were paid and plenty of food so we never disagreed. It was a nice time. I always discussed our money issues on anything with her before spending. I appreciated that and her.

Those fall under bills paid.

I might be lucky, or I might’ve just not settled or talked myself into “settling” with anyone. I was picky as f*ck and it paid off.

Hit the nail on the head, man. It’s like the trope of “god I hate my <spouse>” that’s popular these days. Honestly I love spending time with my wife. We were friends and best friends before we dated so I thoroughly enjoy spending time with her. It’s why I married the girl. Now that we have a daughter I enjoy spending time with both my girls. When I need some time on my own all I need to do is say “I’m gonna go play my game” or “gonna go watch some TV in my room” and that’s that.

I will die on the hill of “a partner shouldn’t nag” and “spouses shouldn’t be a negative force”. It’s like bullying. I don’t want you to do this so I’m gonna force you to not do it or else. Eh. I will never understand it. It’s like if your husband beat you and you’re like “oh well it’s not like a full on beating it’s just some smacking to the face because they care”.

Like I’ve told patients in the ambulance, just because they don’t hit you and you’re some big tough guy doesn’t mean you aren’t being beaten either verbally or emotionally.

I get the occasional eyeroll but she's the one who pushed me to rebuild and upgrade my cylinder head a few years back. Everything since then has been to support that work because I don't want it to go to waste. Or so I tell her..
