I know the 4g63t wont swap into a 98 gs unless there is a crap load of modifications done but I got 5 grand to spend and I have this LS1 engine and transmission sitting in my garage now off a corvette. Would I be able to cram this 5.7 v8 LS1 into the eclipse? If I were to spend a shit load on throwing in a 4g63t I may as well put in this beast for the price.

I remember seeing an rx7 or something with a mad swap.

The RX7 had the supra turbo engine. Pretty nice little setup. Now for your setup, I doubt it will work, not only do you have to worry bout the engine and tranny fitting, you would have to make it a RWD, since the 5.7L with the tranny bolted to it is wider than your car. It would cost ALOT more tha your 5Gs. Plus a descent 4G63 will whoop up on a LS1.

V8 in an rx7 is a lot easier. If I were you, Id find an FC rx7 (late 80's) for under a grand and swap in the ls1. He's right, converting a FWD to RWD will not be fun.

There was a member on here that tried and LT1 I believe. He never had pics up or much info so I dont know what to tell you.

What I can say is sell the LS1 and your NT and buy a GSX. Not only will it be easier but more satisfying in the end. The motor will physically fit, but then what about that tranny. A T56 will be an easier fit than an 4L60E but they are both big and wont fit under the car. You will need to do major cutting and fab work to get it all together.

Good luck.

I seen one of these in person dominate a low 12's lightning on the bottle.

I dont wanna get into a flame war but the 4g63 whooping up on a LS1 is just plain ignorance. A lid/cutout/nittos fbody will run mid 12s all day. Throw in a 150 shot ( Which they handle no problem completely stock ) and a set of longtube your in the Low 11s. Having spent what 3-4k in mods? You can put down 600rwhp with the cash it takes to get a 4g63 into the 350rwhp range. And the LS1 is making tourque like it is its job.

I will have to agree with him on this one. Alot of people that have never been in the domestic side of cars think that all motors with pushrods are old technology and suck. All the domestic automakers have done everything that make import motors so great, but they did it decades ago. The LS1 is one of the best motors ever brought to mass production.

But you can get a 4G63 into the 12's off of the bottle with less than $2,000 if im not mistaken.

Also i have seen LS1's in Fieros(sp?) and it was BAD!(bad as in good...not bad as in bad..yea)

put it in a 240z. stock ls1's and all in a 240z have ran 12s with slicks they ran high 11s its all about the power to weight well traction too

A guy who works at our local jeep dealership put a LS1 into a stealth... converted it into rear wheel drive. It's way cool  :thumb:

Interesting and I was just there!!! Wish I had known that. My brother will be in Rapid next weekend to pick up his 91 GSX up out at Logans. I'm going to ask him to stop and take pics.

Do you have any pics?
Do you know the guys name?
What color is the car?

we're actually having a meet here in RC this weekend. Have your brother give me a call (I'll pm you my number) and I'll try to hook him up w/ the guy w/ the stealth so he can take pix. It was the coolest thing seeing it do RWD burnouts at the dragstrip :thumb:

AS myeclipse5 stated, yes it can be done. There are a few here that have gone low 12's with next to no money, and a friend did a 57 trim, cam, intake, exhaust (but it was unbolted so he could have just removed the stocker), injectors, dsmlink. Still on stock bottom end, and 2g head, and stock SMIC. Ran a 12.03 at 4200 ft in elevation. But then similar stories can be said about V-8s. I used to be in the V-8 sceen, and still work regualrly on V-8s being a nascar sactioned offical (tech inspector) on the local oval track. Used to drive mustangs, changed my idea of power when I got the 2.3L turbo t-bird, since then have owned 2 DSMs.

But back on subject, autoBAHN would be into his project more than $5k to do this. Agreed, plus it would take ALOT of experiance to be able to complete this task which is going to increase the cost tremendiously.

You are an idiot .. most ls1s you see on the street are NOT heavily modded. Our cars generally are. Oh .. and we have a turbo... Yes our car with 3k in it and an ls1 with 3k in it is a good matchup .. however turbo the ls1 and run turbo to turbo instead of motor to turbo and tell me which car is faster....

And to the guy that said his friend spent 20k on a camaro ... our cars cost 20k+ as well when they were new....

Well I personally have both cars :) . I spent 9k for my hardtop 98 Formula (Lightest Fbody) and about 2,200 for my talon. I haven't really delved into the modding on the DSM but I can tell you I have on my LS1. Ive spent about 5.8k in mods which includes suspension, wheel/tire, drivetrain, motor done mostly myself.

With stock heads/bottom end, TSP231/237 114 LSA cam w/ valvetrain, boltons, and a 150tnt wet shot I am seeing 562rwhp/583rwtq and running consistant basement 11s on balding nittos. When I get tire it will be in the 10s. And I have made about 20 passes without anything breaking.

Both motors are formidable but saying the 4g63 will woop up on a LS1 is just laughable. Run that DSM into a head/cam/poweradder LS1 done right, it wont be pretty unless your DSM is pretty much full race.
