Low Compression

After doing a compression test the numbers were not good, they were very low except in one cyl. highest cyl was 155. i would like to know if anyone knows what *might* be wrong with the symptoms given, slow accel/sluggish all around, smell of oil/gas while driving, no smoke out of exaust, thats about it. mods include exaust, 16g, fmic, fuel pump....thanks alot any ideas would be great. could it just be a new head gasket? valve seals?

if you have low compression it usually means your rings or HG are bad.

As for the other problem, do a leak down test and it should tell you what the problem is. Also, do you have other symptoms such as overheating? Low coolant? Oil in coolant? Coolant in oil? If you aren't losing coolant than it is probably bad rings

Do a leakdown test, Then listen with a stethescope (spelling?) in the tailpipe, intake manifold, crankcase(take oil cap off and listen it valve cover) and such to see where the air is escaping out of the cylinder. Then post up the results.

I'm having the same problem. I just did a compression test on mine and the results varied from 132-145. Mine is a 95 Tsi AWD. It just got slow in the past few days. It has 65,000 miles on it, but I would certainly expect a 4g63 to last longer than that. No smoke at all out the back, no coolant in oil or oil in the coolant. So I'd be interested in the results of your leakdown test if you get it done before me.

that seems kinda low for your mileage unless that engine was beat or not taken care of.

Yeah, I know, It doesn't make any sense. I'm the third owner and it never had any mods till I bought it. Even at that the only mods I've done are DSM Link, Supra pump, AFPR, 1g BOV, and gutted cat. Where it really gets bad is at around 4,000 rpms where it just doesn't want to go past that. Almost like its governed at that speed.
