Finally got this car running after the previous owner left it sitting for about a year. I let it run for about 10 minutes, then I decided to pull it forward about 10 feet. Right when it moved, I had a horrible knocking noise! I checked to make sure timing was on to rule out jumped timing and rods hitting the valves. It gets louder/more violent when I rev the engine. It sounded like it was coming from the head/intake, but then as soon as I made this video I got in and pressed the clutch and the noise went away. So this made me think it was a bad input shaft bearing or a throw out bearing. Only thing is, I held the clutch down and revved the engine and the noise still happened at around 3k rpms or so. From what I understand, input shaft bearings make the noise go away completely when the clutch is pressed. Then eventually it was hard to even replicate the noise until I'd rev it to 5k rpms or so and let it idle

Ive never heard a TOB go bad so I'm not sure if this noise is even possible to be a TOB or if its rod knock or what...

I drained the trans fluid later and it was dark grey, didnt see any shavings or metal.

Whats it sound like to you guys?

Sorry guys, just changed the video to public!

Im thinking its possible to be loose flywheel bolts too. Its coming from what seems to be the center of the bay possibly more to the left, so Im assuming its the bellhousing area. I had a stethoscope on and I could hear it more from the intake than the bellhousing though.

Did it do this before any? Maybe the plate that covers the flywheel and clutch? Or maybe a loose carrier baring bolts? Just look everything over and make sure it is tight.

Yeah I would be pulling the trans out asap before more damage is caused. It sounds horrible definitely my guess is input shaft or flywheel. Either way no good and it has to be pulled to find out what exactly it is.

I have no clue what it did before. The guy I got it from hadnt driven it since april or so. So im not sure if it was shot when I got it or if he half @ssed it someplace and used an aftermerket tob, didnt torque things properly, etc... the inspection plate is no longer on the vehicle. I can see straight onto the flywheel.

^^ I was thinking of pulling it tomorrow, but I just wanted to know if the noise atleast sounds like it could be a trans issue and not like rod knock or anything.

Yea i would be pulling my transmission. When i got my GSX i had to pull it twice before i got it right. The guy i got it from had a mechanic work on it and not put all the bolts back in the belt housing there were 3 missing and the 2 bolts that help the carrier bearing on were gone also. Do it once the right way, or do it twice.

Dude that honestly sounds like a piston flopping around. Damn. Or like a huge bolt dropped in a cylinder. I know its not, but it does sound like the bottom end. It s a video though, we cant hear what you can.

I drained the oil today and it wasnt any shavings or anything in it. It was low maybe 1.5 qts but that could have been from him doing [anything].

Also, theres NO smoke out the exhaust evem when I rev it to 6k rpms.

And finally, the sound comes and goes. After I revved it and pushed the clutch a few times, the sound died down to barely audible. If it was a rod or bearing I feel like it would be there all the time.

Just an update::

I listened for the sound for around 10min or so and I swear its coming from the head! It sounded a bit louder from cyl 1 or 2. So I pulled the valve cover and it all looks good. No sludge, springs etc all look good. Pulled the oil pan, no shavings and the bearings were all there. They had play (from driver to pass) but no up down. I took a picture of #1 & 3 bearings since those are the only ones I took off. They have a SMALL scuff in them, but nothing to make this noise.

When I rev it by hand I can feel a vibration thru the intake.

I DID notice that the other owner installed a centerforce dual friction clutch. Im not sure if those make any noise or not.
I tried to push the flywheel with a pry bar thru the inspection plate, but it didnt move so im reluctant to drop the trans.

Is there anything else that could cause this from an engine standpoint?

Edit:: Also noticed the car has ngk plugs with the double tips (forgot to write diwn the part #) could those cause the engine to knock?

I checked the other 2 bearings, everything looked good. Torqued them, but it back together. Ran the car again just to verify the noise went away when I hit the clutch, and it did. I was REALLY trying to not drop the trans, but I bit the bullet and did. The whole time Im thinking if theres nothing wrong behind this trans...

2hrs later trans is out. Take the clutch off and PP, flywheel bolts are still in. Then I turned the flywheel bolts, all finger tight/loose :toobad:

Problem solved! Thanks guys.

So far Ive found every bolt on the front suspension loose, calipers loose, front wheel hub bolts loose, axle nuts loose... you get the idea!
