legal or illegal????

Wow UT isn't anywhere near that harsh, I've never gotten pulled over in my Awd mainly because I don't drive it like a jackass. But my friends get pulled over all the time and they never ask about electronics inside the dash or anywhere around it.
Not moving to California ever.

Ive had more trouble with small town cops, ive got pulled over 3 times for no front plates even though its in windshield. Which is 100 percent legal in Texas i asked a DA and was told that as long as its visible from the front of the car and there arent any factory mounting holes it doesnt have to be on the bumper.

Hey 96RSproject if you are ever pulled over and are asked if they can search your car and dont want them to then give them a reason. They wont have probable cause if you say no because your girlfriend might have some stuff in the car that she doesnt want people seeing :D

Ha now that i think about that he might try harder to search your car then ha. Try and tell him no because your boyfriend has some stuff in the car hahaha he def. wont want to look then.

Wow, makes me love Indiana.LOL we don't get in trouble for anything like that, no emissions, no dumb exhaust laws or anything like that. Basicly, just don't speed and you can do pretty much whatever you want to your car and still DD it.

I don't even want to get started on the stupid tickets I got on my GSXR LOL.

I'm so used to cops in Nebraska now, I basically make them my bi***. Honest to god, the majority of the times I've talked to cops, I point out something that they didn't know or forgot, make them check the laws, and they end up feeling stupid, and just letting me off easy ### they know I'll tear them up in court, or know that they have no grounds to stand on.

But, in nebaska, they don't give a hell about smog or mod's, as long as your car isn't too loud after 10:30 pm, you're good. (Noise ordinance), oh and better have a front plate, and nothing hanging from the rear view mirror

WOAH WOAH WOAH all this cop-hate sucks! Im afraid to even tell you im a cop. Ok heres the deal from New York State. ( and please no haters- i have yet to ticket any DSMer for any modifications done to their car. )
In new york ANYTHING added to your car within the view of the driver can be ticketed. ( those tree air fresheners, gps unit on the windshield - gauges... this is considered an obstruction of view and is ticketable. Would i ever give anyone a ticket for a pine-tree air freshener? probly not but if the cops having a bad day and you have a poor attitude you could pay for it.

AND NO MORE COP BASHING!!!!! :banghead:

They just wanted to see if you were drinking, but he didn't want to come right out and say he pulled you over just to smell your breath. That would be like harrassment.

Since he pointed out the fact that you had some minor violations, you're supposed to thank him for being so lenient and be on your way. He needs some reason for stopping you, and that was it.

You're lucky we're looking for DUI's tonight = Sorry to bother you sir have a nice night. They can't just go around being truthful and curteous, they would loose their edge.

I doubt anyone here has a problem with cops doing their job correctly. You're on the job to protect and serve, and everyone appreciates it.

But when you guys go handing out tickets like candy, just because someone pisses you off, its not just. And especially when cops go about abusing their power with taking advantage of people who don't know the law.

I have met a few good honest cops, who exercised common sense. Had no problem with them. But the cops that sit their and say "oh I can smell alchohol on your breath" every single time you get pulled over on a weekend, or pull you over with some rediculous speed they said you were doing, those are the cops people hate.

I have friends who are cops, and even a few family members. I know exactly how it goes in the force. Its not even the rooks who do stupid shit, even veteran State Patrol do.

Props to you on being a decent cop though, if you're being honest.

Cops are ridiculous here in TX. I was pulled over in a previous 2g eclipse of mine and got ticketed for front clear corners (even though the bulbs were orange ), exhaust ( had a catback AND legit carb number ), and defective equipment ( tire tread too low, they were nitto drag radials about a month old ). Everything was pretty much legal and he was on a power trip. I got all of them dismissed. To answer your question, the legality of your gauges/mods depends on local laws. Although they may not be totally illegal, the general concensus here is correct. It is probable cause for them to mess with you because in their opinion, your car is not "the normal or usual".

Guys... Before you go and tell off a cop of while you're being pulled over. Just remember that while you're on the side of the road is not the time to prove your side of the case. That's what court is for. I've sat in a courtroom waiting to testify on a shoplifting case for work while 3 others represented themselves each against an officer who gave out failure to stop at a traffic sign violation. All cases were identical and from the same stop sign. Yet only one person won their case based on circumstantial evidence. The other two didn't take pictures of the area and had no evidence to prove their case. The officer's video in all three cases was pretty compelling to show that they did in fact not stop. But, the person that won, took pictures of the scene and showed the court that at that time there were two trees that blocked the stop sign and by the time he saw it he was already too far to stop. Now, it was pretty much just some creative picture taking that won that though.

Roll down your window just enough so they can hear you and you can hand them your registration and insurance. If they ask you out of the vehicle roll up the window and lock your doors and get out. They did not ask you to search your vehicle.

OP, When he asked you if you knew about your gauges being illegal. You should have sidestepped the question with asking him if you are free to go or if the HID's were the only reason he pulled you over. If he wanted to give you a ticket for the gauges he would have had to tell you that was one of the reasons he pulled you over. Otherwise you're just offering him up information and giving him PC to search the vehicle for further infractions.

Then again I live in Missouri with the most laidback cops ever... They're too busy trying to be productive so that we'll elect to reinstate their C.O.M.B.A.T. (Community Backed Anti-drug Tax). LOL

some cops are assholes and some aren't then again my respect to those who do their jobs correctly...and to those who don't good luck for you i beleive in karma...

in my state we pretty much just get pulled over for speeding, bumpin', window tint, and seat belts, the cop with the most seat belt tickets in each city at the end of the year gets put in a drawing to win a new charger cop car. we dont have to do smog testing or and sort of emissions stuff, i also have gauges in my car i havent been bothered about them and i've been pulled over quite a few times. But hell there just the aem gauges so all's you see is a little red number there not backlit so idk about that one.

Though most of the time when you get pulled over the officer will be talking to the driver. In that case I don't want to be the passenger and officers really hate when passengers talk without being talked to...

Otherwise, I love psychology!! Then again I do have to get people to admit that they stole shit. It's fun when you know that they are going to deny everything you ask them. Then the more you show them what you know they crack.

Yes it is illegal to have aftermarket gauges. Even some State Ref will ask you to take it out. But it is okay to have stock factory gauges, like evo's come with boost gauges, volts, whatever. But you do realize the location of STOCK factory gauges. Many are no where close to the speedometer or driver side mirror like many of us have them.

I'm sorry to correct you on what you think you know.

Having aftermarket gauges on the pillar is not illegal. My brother personnally knows chp's and city cops, does ride alongs all the time. I had him ask an officer if it was illegal in any way, because I wanted to know before I went with my setup.

He was told it was not illegal but sometimes you will get pulled over by an officer that is having a bad day and they will write you a ticket for it because they know young kids won't fight it :idontknow: (afraid they will get caught for other mods).

Sorry man, just realized you guys are farthur south then I was (Mendocino County). I know cops can be much more stricter in southern Cali :coy:.

Here in cali where I live they will pull you over for performance stickers on your car because it gives them suspicion that your car is modded or they think they can find a good reason to write you a tickette. luckily all my stickers are on the underside of my hood :thumb: it's not that its illegal, its just that gauges do draw attention just as the stickers would.

If Maryland didnt have emissions, this would be the place to live when it comes to cars and cops. They really do leave you alone unless of course, when its nearing the 1st of the month, everyone SLOW DOWN!. LOL

ive had freinds get pulled over for stupid shit like this but i never have hell we have emisions and inspections here and i drove with my car slammed to the ground obviously no bumper support (bumper cut like the holeways up) tinted windows open 3 inch downpipe, no stickers on my windsheild. i drove like this for ever never got pulled over passed cops every day. i always seem to get lucky. cops are dicks though i did get pulled over once by a cop on a bike in the city for racing on highway wich is drag racing because i took of to fast from a red light. i didnt make it over 25mph and i was drag racing and the cop was on a bicycle.

Supposedly what were you drag racing against?

From a stop light that should have been considered "Exhibition of Acceleration". Pretty much.. "showing off."

I'm sorry this might come off wrong, but you were on motorcycle and the cop was on a bicycle... You Stopped???

Most Moto guys I know don't even put their plates on. Therefore if they have to... They can... If you know what I mean... Or they mount it under their rear fender/Seat.

Huh:hmm:?

Anyways Washington cops aren't too bad about mods... I've gotten one exhaust ticket, and that time I should of had another reckless so I wasn't complaining. I've been threatened with it a few other times, and one for no front plate.

my father was an officer in the grand prairie, tx area and i asked him what his thoughts were..
He said that the officer was more than likely giving you a hard time because he was in a mood but even if he wrote the ticket it would NOT have held in court. Even with strict cali laws.

Your best bet is to Register your car in Airzona, and get a DL there also. Then the cops cannot mess with you and they only issue a rear plate. Just seup up a PO Box and find an address on Zillow. That is how you win in CA. Also the insurance is cheaper. So you win in the long run.
