legal or illegal????

8k is too high, the blue in them is so noticeable im not surprised you got pulled over for them here in Ca.

6k at most IMO looks the most "oem stock"

as for gauges depending how you wired them up and what type you have.

The old school gauges that just uses a bulb back light, you can install along the dimmer, they werent that bright to begin with but putting them on the dimmer you can dim them down to be low key.

Now all the new gauges now are super bright and don't really work with the dimmer. Esp if you have tinted gauges where you cant see them in the day so they have to be on to see.

That is why i recommend a switch to be installed inline. i just turn them off at night, makes everything look more key.

Also I got rid of the pillar pod, everybody and their moms vans have it, its not as exclusive as it was a while back in the late 90s when only cars that really needed gauges got them.. (mostly turbo vehicles), now its the in thing, and usually means a car is modified when a cop sees it. Even though is the gauge is just a volt meter and a clock LOL

Should have said that "as far as I know, they're stock lights" when he asked. Burden of proof is on the prosecution. Just have your stock lights at home in the garage to switch them out when they finally do give you a ticket.

Yes it is illegal to have aftermarket gauges. Even some State Ref will ask you to take it out. But it is okay to have stock factory gauges, like evo's come with boost gauges, volts, whatever. But you do realize the location of STOCK factory gauges. Many are no where close to the speedometer or driver side mirror like many of us have them.

That is crazy never heard of that. He just wanted to look at your ride and couldn't help but notice your gauges. He forgot to take his midal and he probably didnt get laid but hey dont sweat it if you didn't get a ticket

i asked him why it was illegal an all he came up with was with: there a distraction just like having neon lights...

What a line of bullshit. So now it's illegal to know what's going on under the hood of your car? Apparently the officer has never seen the dashboard of a semi:

Wonder what the cop has to say about regular dash lighting? I've never been in an accident, but if I am the first thing I'm telling the cop when he asks what happened is "I was distracted by my dash lights".

Just be glad you don't live in New Jersey... you'd get a ticket for your car idling during the cop's inspection.

Easy now, LOL. It's not really that bad; all I get pulled over for is no front plate and loud exhaust. Oh, by the way, front plates are bullshit. They ruin the whole appearance of the car.

Im not 100% sure on this, but I dont think your allowed to have any modifications to your vehicle. Yes its technically illegal to have the gauges and hids, but he was just being a dick.

It is not illegal to video tape cops. Cops will try to bully you out of your rights. The only thing you have to do is provide a valid id, and you do not have to answer any questions. However, if they are placing you under arrest, then the story changes.

This is why you take an extra step or so to paint pipes black... or put factoryish looking shields over your exhaust mani. Camouflage. That's why wanna mount my boost gauge inside the dash board cluster housing. >.> Not so obvious.

This is the number one thing I've noticed that has happened in the US, no where else on earth can you get a ticket for the most stupid shit, get harrassed so ####ING BLATANTLY, and do NOTHING about it.

Record high fines, cops with a severe attitude problem, over population of police, when the #### did this country let them run over the public like this?

A cop will try to violate and take away all your rights because the public is uneducated in this. Just like you have the right to refuse a search. Cops will try and bully you into submission, but if your not under arrest, they really have nothing on you.

i second the front plate ruining the apperance of the car. used to work at a dealer and they look soo different without the front plate on. thats all the tickets i get too is for no front plate.

its worked in my favor too. :D got pulled over for 80 in a 55. played it cool with the cop. he noticed no front plate and ticketed me for that vs. the speeding ticket. no points!!

+1 My dad is a trucker and a farmer and I swear he looks more at the crops than at the road! :p

I'm also so glad I don't live in the States! Up here in Saskatchewan, cops hardly give out speeding tickets or pull people over. They're too busy trying to catch drug dealers and stuff. Heck, I drove my car 15 miles to work for a while w/o plates! :shhh:

I wouldnt worry about the gauge pod unless you get a ticket for it. Im sure its an easy one to fight and win too.

you need to check your state laws on this. Any auto inspection place should be able to give you exact info for free. Assuming you do have inspection stickers in cali? Here in oklahoma we don't so there is no problem with that kind of stuff.

Also, it's your word against his, put a dimmer on them if possible, soon as they say something dim them and say what distraction? guess your seeing things. You could always talk with the d.a to get that pulled before court in most cases.

when I got done building my 91 I too it for a nice test drive around town. Low and behold po po pulled me over for no front plate.

Cop: Do you know why I pulled you over?
Me: No front plate
Cop: yup, Liscense and reg and proof of insurance
Me: here ya go
cop goes in runs my tags and me find out the only thing on my record is running a stop sign and comes back
cop: Nice car, Got alot done with it
Me: Yes sir, Just got it finished up and taking it for a test drive
Cop: is this street legal?
Me: If you wanna crawl on the ground and get that pretty blue uniform dirty be my guest
Cop: I will take your word on it, What are the guagues for?
Me: Boost gauge water temp and wideband I tell him what they do
Cop: whats that by your steering wheel? (pointing at my turbo timer)
Me: ahh its a turbo timer, It keeps the car running after I drive it so the turbo can spool down and cool off blah blah blah
Cop: is the car fast?
Me: I wont out run your radio, But your not touching me in that thing (pointing at his cruiser)
Cop: Yeah its hard to out run a radio, Do you race?
Me: nope, I have a CDL thats how I make a living. The track is only for me. (gods honest truth cant lose my liscnese over something stupid)
Cop: so this is a 91? thing looks brand new.
Me: yep its a 91 60k miles on the body
Cop: well you take care put that front plate in the window and you will be okay
Me: well I'm moving to alabama here soon so I wont re-mount it because they dont have a front plate
Cop: okay well take care of this thing
Me: will do!

I took off.

That was in Iowa and in muscatine were the cops are really bad and tend to not be nice if you have a record. But I'm cool with a clean record and have no reason to lie. They use to come to the hang out spot and bust peoples balls about cars because most of them were pretty crappy and not done right and would point to my car and say yeah its japanese but I bet it can take all of you alls cars.

I'm so glad I dont live in smognaziornia.

A bit humorous to see a lot of people are in shock, but notice the CA guys attitude are "just another day.."

TRUTH! I just got my second "modified exhaust" ticket in as many months last night. The cop was actually pretty cool about it and only pointed out my blue inline oil filter and the red on my oil return line. Not a thing about the rest of it :D.

In Nebraska if they ask to search the car and you refuse they consider it "probable cause" so they search it anyway. Otherwise all they every get me here for is no front plate.
