Knocking

When my 92 Talon TSI is at idle or low RPM i hear a knocking that dissapears when I get above 2500RPM or so, I saw at another site that it may be the oil pump put on at 180 off has anyone else dealt with this. The kid that owned the car before me said he replaced the timing belt.

nope, I was affraid that would come up, cuz it does sound like it's coming from that area. Did the valve lash on my 260Z few months ago wasn't too fun. What do I check for to see if it is the lifters?

I'm not sure on how you can check the lifters but it is a pretty distinct sound. If thats where the noise sounds like its coming from than my guess would be that that is your problem. The only good way to get rid of it is by replacing the lifters with the revised lifters Mitsubishi now sells. But other than it being really annoying it isn't harming anything.

You could also try and drain 2 quarts of oil from your car and replace it with 2quarts of ATF and let your car Idle for about 5-10 minutes and then change your oil. That can help due to all the detergents that are in ATF. Good luck!

Get a stethascope (<-- sweet spelling eh!) and use the end of it and you can hear alot in your car, its a really cool tool.

This may sound like a repeat - I've said this on several threads now. Don't rule out that it could be a rod bearing. I went through the lash adjuster thing. I thought it was the lifters, friends thought it was the lifters, the dealership mech. thought it was the lifters. I had them replace the lifters. 3 days later, two of the rod bearings siezed. It sounded like lifters because the sound was being transmitted from the piston up through the head.

This may not apply to you at all, but I just went through it and would hate to see anyone else fall victim to the knock/tick mystery sound.
