Dude, you don't have to live with that lifter tick!
Yeah, I know, but that's $7.50x16 more than I have right now. I'm planning on doing it someday-- either that or just taking them out and cleaning them good. It's not too bad right now.

doubt this helps anyone but i found out that one of the bolts on my starter had worked its way loose and i assume was vibrating and setting off my knock sensor. Since i fixed that i have no more part throttle knock problems but i still get about 7-11 counts of knock at wot.

What are average knock counts on a stock dsm?

Im pretty interested in the Mobil 1 casueing knock... I run there 15-40w in my motor (stock internal 92 6 bolt)..I dont get much knock while crusin, just when i go more then 50% throttle. It will go to 43, and stay there till i let off  ... my knock sensor (stock), is all goowie. som i ordered a new one hoping that will fix it.

But if Mobil 1 can cause it, then what oil should I switch to?

Switched to 10W-30 Pennzoil regular stuff with a Bosch filter and my lifter tick is almost gone. I say almost only because I can hear tick very faintly inside the car everyone in a while now. Its like a new car though. It pulls way harder and is just making the power it should be now. My DSM likes regular oil. Maybe you should try some. :thumb:

Interesting info. I desided to stay with Mobil 1 for now and see how it goes. I pulled my knock sensor out today to replace it.... Got it out, looked at it and noticed ALL of the black goo is GONE!.. Wish i can put the new one in right now, but i gotta go to dinner for my fathers 50th bday. Im hoping the new one will work out much better... if knock still persists, ill explore other oil brands. As for filters, i use SuperTech brand filters. They are better then Fram's, and half the cost!

i would imagine that a good running stocker would have little knock, at least thats my guess...i just went tuning tonight and it took alot of richening up to get zero knock

i tried to go tuing as well.. im at +18% from 3-7grand and still getting 27-30 counts. i was at 43 before.

mines got lots of miles on it so I am wondering about knock too. I get one run with knock and the next one without it, no tuning differences.

So my question is where is it and can you take it out without going nuts under there? How hard, how much time?

That was helpful, but i didnt have a 15/16 laying around. So i sized up an adjustable wrench and used it. I also didnt use the PB blaster... I just tightend it a little, then it broke loose to take it off. But i couldnt break it loose without tightening it at all.

I, too have been having the same problem.

I've been using Mobil 1 Synthetic 15W50 since I rebuilt the engine 10k or so miles ago. Might have to switch to Pennzoil 10W30 as one of you recommended. :)

I do have the same symptoms (Pulled timing at WOT, engine stumbles and loses power at partial throttle, etc.), and I've been trying to figure it out. I'm about to do the knock sensor as well as lifters in order to recitfy the problem. One thing puzzles me though... Can a noisy idler bearing or loose bolt really set the knock sensor off? My alternator pulley's making one hell of a squeaking noise. I was wondering if that could contribute as well...

Thanks for the help.
