Hello, with transmission parts becoming less and less available I am looking at getting my 99 awd transmission rebuilt. I got a quote from jacks transmission for just a standard stock rebuild (which I think is about all you can get anywhere at this point, short of a dogbox) and they also offered to do a micro polish on the gears and 4 spider center diff for a little less than $1000.
My question is I have a 16g waiting to go on and would look at maybe going to an fp green in the future. Would either of those extras be worth it for me? Or would I just be wasting my money for the output of those turbos?
Thanks.

My personal take on this is that for just the 16G on stock axles and other drivetrain, you are ok with the stock rebuild. Just a heads up however, I sent mine in for a standard rebuild as well and that standard quote "rebuild" also including the micro polish turned into another 2k once they broke it apart. So I would have some spare built into your budget just in case. Had mine rebuilt by them two years ago. Oh and from shipment back to door took about three months. BUT they are great at supporting the dsm community. Don't forget that TMZ Performance also does rebuilds on our transmissions too.

Thanks for the reply. So if I am understanding you right they found other things they had to do adding up to $2k extra?
I am aware of Tim too I just don't far out he is booked it was quite a while for a bit there. Probably the same for jacks.

I wouldn't bother with the gears. Your weak spot is the 3/4 hub/slider in the 99 transmission. It just doesn't have much material and torque will make it fail before any of the gears will. Keep it down with the Green if you do go that route.

Yup, when they broke it apart they had issues with some gears etc and after cleaning it got worse and needed replacing. Got it back and installed in the car and then something THEY did on the install caused it to seize in second and had to ship it again and then have it repaired and then shipped back. So shipping alone added up quick..... they don’t cover shipping. It’s in the small print LOL. BUT they did work with me on return shipping the last time since I was so upset and everything I went through. Total came up to around prob $3k said and done including mechanics labor to remove, install, remove and then install again hahaha.

Good to know. Pretty sure that is a part that's been discontinued so great haha. And the green is a maybe and if I did go that way it wouldn't be pushing it to hard. I'm not chasing crazy numbers just a fun weekend car.

That sucks you had to go through that. I can pull it and put it back in myself but your sending it out to be rebuilt for a reason not to have to pull it a bunch haha.

There are still a few floating around but expect them to disappear in the next couple of years.

I have also been needing a transmission rebuild, and also was considering TMZ and Jack’s, but did find another DSM specialist: TRE in Michigan. I’ve spoken with the owner, Jon, and he sounds well qualified. I would wager that all three are superior to some random local tranny shop in terms of knowing what problem areas to watch out for during the rebuild process. I’m now having a replacement trans and xfer case rebuilt at TRE, and like a replacement diff as well. I’ll still have the original units from my car to keep as spares down the road. I’ll certainly report back on the experience.

I had the ultimate synchro rebuild done at Jack's on my 98 transmission and the only charges above advertised were a replacement 1st gear ($178) and return shipping ($130). I dropped the core off with them at the Shootout to save on shipping. Transmission is good but my shifter is garbage and I've ordered the complete shifter rebuild kit from @Gsx-Dude from Germany so hopefully soon I'll be able to comment on whether or not it's worth it to shoehorn this many synchros in a W5M33.

I had emailed TMZ about a rebuild and never heard back. TRE was another option I was considering but in the end I made my decision completely based entirely on who was at the Shootout when I arrived in the AZ-1 with a transmission instead of a passenger seat, and that was Jack's.

Good to know TRE is still doing DSM's. I'd certainly like to hear how it is when you get it back.

Yeah I have used TMZ before for other things and parts but I sent him an email about a week ago and haven't heard back so I imagine he's pretty busy right now. I'm sure they all do a fine job.

I'm slammed guys, not trying to miss emails but I have 3 months easy of work sitting here to do, and a bazillion business response emails to deal with. I cannot keep up with all of it and sometimes people have to understand that. I'm only a 1 man show, and on limited hours during the current situation due to other responsibilities.

Parts are very hard to find and will only get worse.

Thanks,
TMZ

Thanks for the reply Tim, hope I didn't come across as complaining as I completely understand how busy you are. The only thing that would keep me from going through you is your backlog which again I understand. I'm not pulling the trigger in the immediate future so we will see. I do want to get it done before parts completely dry up though.
Actually is there anyway I could get on a wait list or something like that for you? I have no problem waiting however long I just don't want the car down for longer than it needs to be.

What did you find in a Jacks transmission that turned you away? I have one with very few miles and it has developed a 3rd gear "crunch" as it goes in from 2nd to 3rd but not from 4th to 3rd. I have to open it soon so what should I check out Kurt?

I'd like to know why you say that as well. Also what are your turn around times for rebuilds looking like right now?

I'd be interested in knowing as well why Jacks is so bad. I'm currently in talks with them to take a transmission to them for a rebuild, using parts I'm supplying.

I know their 4-spider center diff rebuilds are not as good as TMZ or TRE but besides that what else?

I am no longer taking in jobs that require shipping a transmission. The money is not worth the stress of ups/fedex f***ing it up. Last summer they destroyed a crate made from 3/4 aircraft ply and 2x4's. It was a miracle that it didn't hurt the trans. I'm moving my efforts to cnc machining and farming now.

As for my prior statement, i'll leave it at: it's worth the wait for tim.

Sorry to hear your are not doing rebuilds anymore but understandable. Thanks for the input.

Didn't shed much light on any issues though.

This isn't really related but maybe it will help someone if they stumble onto this down the road.
I would still like to get the transmission rebuilt just before parts completely dry for the peace of mind that is done butttt...
Switching back to the stock shift knob really improved shift feeling in my opinion. I had a smaller delrin shift knob on and it just made each shift feel really notchy and bad. I'm not sure why but I put the stock one back on last night and shifts feel much smoother. So if you have done everything else and shifting is kind of rough put the stock shift knob on if it's not.

Was your delrin knob lighter than stock? Shift knobs are one of the few things on a car that you really want to be heavy. There used to be a part number around for a Mitsubishi shift knob that was nearly identical to the OE 2g one but much heavier, and it was outstanding! Long gone, unfortunately, but I can definitely see how you could have that experience with a lighter-than-stock knob.

It was a bit lighter now that you mention. Just goes to show one should think long and hard about what changes one is making before just throwing in parts.
