IT people need advice here for Software Development. Career path.

What's up guys. Figured I'd ask for some advice from all the IT people on the forum. I'm looking to go into Software Development (after canceling my plans for Mechanical Engineering). I was just wondering if I should look into going straight into a Software Development Major or is there a basis I should get before it. I have a scholarship for a college for a major in Computer/Web Programming and Analysis. Do you think I should take this first and then find a Software development major, are they similar? Are they completely different for a job?
