I bought my 98 eclipse a few years back and its always had wiring issues (poor running, dim lights, battery draining, etc). The guy took out an alarm and some gauges before, I took out the AFC since I have Link now and it looks like a 3rd grader did the wiring. Anyways, I don't know much about wiring but this rats nest doesn't look right. Anyone know if this is ok? I'm not sure how the wiring is supposed to look. I'm assuming they just took all the ground wires and put them together. I'd rather not buy a new harness but I will if I have to. I can go through and solder all the crappy connections.

Thanks.

I think I'm gonna be sick. Please tell me that you removed electrical tape from those bare wires...

It's not going to be impossible to fix, but you should probably seek professional assistance if you're not too familiar with electrical work...

Haha yeah I did remove electrical tape from most of it but some it was bare. Where would I go for something like this, a stereo shop? I dont like other people working on my car so I usually try to figure it out myself.

Could I cut out the bad sections and solder new wire in their place? Is it ok to connect all those wires together like that? What are those bare wires? It looks like they come from a sleeve that has a lining of metal. I have no idea where all these wires come from.

Whatever you do don't take anything to a stereo shop.
Go get yourself a $5 soldering iron, some different colored wires, shrinkwrap, solder.

It's pretty hard to screw up soldering wire under 20gauge, just twist them together and apply heat/solder.

The bare wire coming out of the large green wires is a shield, to stop RF interference. It just goes to ground.

I would start on wire at time:

Remove pin from the plug,

Solder any breaks back together or replace section of wire,

Slide heatshrink over and shrink it,

Replace pin back in plug.

Its best to use heatshrink when its that bad, electrical tape will turn into a gooey mess after a could years.
