lynnwood,
i was wondering if it was safe to run our cars without the timming belt cover.

here is the story if you want to know.

i was driving down the road and all of a sudden smoke starts filling the car i pull to the side of the road and pop the hood. first thing i see is that the back side of the timming cover is melting, so i turn around and drive the 10 sec. back to my place. now when i get home i take a closer look and find the the timming belt had walked its way off the cams gears and was rubbing on the cover. i thought it was the tension, when i took it all apart i found the the bolt that holds the pivoting part of the timming belt tensioner was busted and i Damn lucky that i did not chuck the belt!!! now the dealer wants $65 bones for the rear cover peice and i dint want to pay it. I mean come on it a small pice of plastic. so i was wondering if it was safe to run without it? thanks for you time.

its not a very good idea to keep it off,its there for a reason,if something were to get thrown up into the engine bay or anything that got in there could very well snap the belt.
