have any of you ever tryed cutting it down? I bought one that was just cut down but it didn't seem to help the throw.. but maybe i could modify it so it would...Do any of you have any experience with making them?

I asume you all have done at least this though.

I have this too, it does make a big difference, but i want an even bigger :shhh: :thumb:

I currently have a 1990 and tried to install the pilot short throw shifter. The instructions that came with it said it was for an 89-94 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Well us 89-90 guys are screwed. When I tried to put it in it wouldn't fit. There's a "pivot point" (where the two pieces are held together with a long bolt) and the short shifter wouldn't fit inside of this section. It wasn't off by much. I'd say probably imbetween a 1/4 - 1/2 and inch difference. I contemplated trying to make the pilot work. I.e. grinding on it enough for it to fit, but I was in need of some other parts too and took it back to the shop where I got it and got the other parts. I really wish someone would make a short shifter for us 1990 guys! I've got a weighted shift knob and a 2g knob along with the symborski bushings and etc. which helps. However a short shifter would finish it all out.

Do any of you have pictures of your own short throw's for the 90, just so he could maybe get a better idea on how to make one... That weighted one would probably be the one i would try to make...But i don't even have a DSM yet. so..:(

It pays to read. Scroll up... Pilot has one, Extreme has one... along with whoever sells short shifters for 1G. The problem is with the 89 to 90 cars which has a different set up.

Making one could be quite hard..I just don't want it shorter, i want the throw shorter..why did they have to do that to the 90's:confused: :|

If you use an aftermarket shift knob like Razo, Momo, or Sparc... your throw will be much shorter.

I have a Razo weighted knob, the heaviest one they have and I have to put it at the medium height. Any shorter than that it feels too short. I did have a short shifter installed at one time but it was just way too short. The way I have it now with the Razo and stock stick I can comfortably rest my forearm on the center console and shift with ease.

I've driven my friend's 2G with the B&M and the throws are so short that it almost feels unnatural. Besides, having a longer through just adds to the challenge and forces you to be a better driver. If you think the 1G throw is bad, you should go drive a VW GTI.

Ok I have the answer. I own a 90 AWD and my first mod was just to put a 2G or VR-4 Knob on it. I got bored with it and cut the lever down past the threads and got a knob that has the 3 or 4 allen screws on it. Well I hated it, those knobs always come loose, my friend has a Celica GTS with a real short throw And I love it, It shortened his by 60%. So I decide to buy the Pilot Short throw for 89-94 or whatever. Anyways it comes with the lever and the base. I go to install it and the base is about a half inch to long. I was pissed. So I looked for anyway to make it fit ( not going to happen.) The parts I received were pretty good quality and made of thick steel. So I decide to Cut the extra off. I put it in the vice and get to work going threw several blades with the dremel, and I also used the hacksaw. Took a while but it was done. I installed the whole kit. And I'm pleased to say the shifts are soo short. But being so short it looks a little weird in the boot when its in nuetral it looks like its in first, but I'm pleased with it. 5th gear doesn't even reach the right side of the boot! LOL. It took alil bit of work but its worth it.

Hope I could help.

TsiTalon90,
I bought the same pilot short shifter too. To my surprise it didn't fit. (Before I knew 1990s were different.) I contemplated grinding it down to make it work, but returned it. Do you have any before and after pictures of the shifter? If not could you get some pictures of the short shifter assembly, how much you took off, and where. That would be awesome. I've been thinking about buying the pilot short shifter again and having a CNC machine shop make me some billet pieces. It would probably be kinda expensive but if I were able to get a short shifter made for 1990s I could probably get enough made it wouldn't be bad. Later.

IMHO, 1Gs don't really need short shifters. If you swap out the stock shift knob, the shifter will be much shorter. The center console is high enough, if you use a short shifter and an aftermarket knob, the shifter would be too short. The stock horse dong knob is twice the height of most aftermarket knobs.

You'll find a huge improvement in shifting if you replace the shifter base bushings with solid bushings sold by most of the dsm vendors. More improvement can be found if you replace the ones at the tranny linkage with solid ones.

With my Razo weight knob set at the highest position, the knob is at the perfect height where I shift and still keep my arm rested on the console. I find this especially handy when cornering hard. Since I don't have aftermarket seats and harness yet... I can brace myself with my forearm on the console.

Paul,
You replaced the rubber bushings with plastic ones or what? how did this help shifting?

Hey, for all you 1g's with a short throw shifter(please dont say to just get a knob, i hate this long throw b.s.), which one do you have and how does it feel? do any of you have the ebay ones?
thanks for the input-
jerome

Why don't you just try getting a short knob and see how that feels? I haven't heard any good reviews on 1g short shifters so I went with the "Short Anatomic" Sparco knob and the symborski shift kit. I like the way it shifts now and don't feel the need for a shortend shifter.

thats exactly what i didnt want to hear, but i do appreciate your trying to help.
i do have the shift kit and a 2g knob which did do the trick, but i hate the throw-there's just too much angle in it, know what i mean.
and i want to hear peoples experience with the short throws because i too heard bad things about them, so id like to know which ones to avoid... but thanks anyway, man.

Blizz92tsi: I'll try to find some pics of it in the car.
PaulPDX: The new knob helps but its doesn't shorten the actual throw that much. The pilot makes shifting half of what you have had to shift.
