Impossible to fix blue smoke. Massive amounts.

OK. so i have over 4,000 in this car. including a full motor rebuild, Brand new turbo rebuild with maybe 10 miles on it. brand new valve seals with maybe 5 miles on it. 176 compression across the board. heres the story.

my car ran great when it was an auto. no smoke. no nothing, the auto went out, so i swapped in a 5 speed. (it was cheap at the time from getting deals) when the motor was out i did a full rebuild. got it together, 4,500 miles later, i start boosting it. MASSIVE amounts of smoke came out my exhaust, so much smoke cars literally had to stop behind me because they could not see the road 1 foot ahead of them. its extremely thick smoke too. all oil. so i rebuilt the turbo, and put in brand new valve seals. drive 5 miles, and try it again. the same exact thing happens.
ive invested so much money in this thing. and i can even drive it to work. idk what else to check.. the head is all new too. there is nothing on this motor i didn't replace... Please help!!! :banghead:

If this one blew just from the bearings going out you need to find the reason why. My guess would beoil contamination. Consider getting a Forced Performance inclined filter.

1/4" of shaft play is enough to wear into the hard parts of the turbo- the ones that don't come in a rebuild kit.

Check your IC piping and see if there is oil residue, it should be pretty obvious.

In my experience, it seems that blue smoke if from oil getting into the combustion chamber(smells like a tired old lawn mower) and white smoke is from oil just getting into the exhaust/ after the combustion chamber. Rings would qualify for oil in the combustion chamber and blue smoke as well.

on a fresh motor, ive only put the best filters i can get on this thing, along with good oil. i don't think it's an oil contamination honestly, i was very very anal about keeping it clean when i was building it, and after. i dont think a fresh motor would be that dirty either. after all this talking, i think the turbo is done for. it really only smokes when i get into boost, and a little, before. mostly when im building some oil pressure. i don't have a problem with blow by, so i don't think its my rings either. i have great compression, and thats on a completely cold motor that sat all night, i did the compression test on.

ya man i would say your turbo is shot, and would look into a new one UNLESS.... you like the turbo you have and know anyone or a place that rebuilds turbos. when i bought my gsx the turbo is a turbonetics for the time being and it had alot of shaft play i dont think 1/4 in. but almost and i brought it to this guy that rebuilds turbos and i got it back i thought they straight up gave me a new turbo.

95% sure its the turbo. As said, the rebuild kit you got doesn't replace the parts that were damaged due to the severe shaft play. You are better off buying another 14b for $50 -100 than a rebuild kit. Don't drive it unless you have to, you don't want to mess up your fresh engine. Good Luck!

Head lift? did you re-use your head studs? Could be the issue if its smoking under boost, thats if you rule the turbo out.

I have had the same problem before when all I use to do was rebuild and sell these cars and we found that some times the intercooler would fill up with tons oil from old bad turbo and every time we the car was under boost it would dump smoke like a crop duster.

Or like everyone else said its the turbo. Also if the rings were bad the motor would be puffing smoke out of valve cover/breather on valve cover.

1/4 of shaft play is just down right ridiculous. I start to question a lot of things if you threw that turbo back on your "rebuilt" motor foreal. :toobad:

I hope you did not reuse any gaskets, o-rings, or headstuds.

PVC oil catchcan is a good investment. 14b for 115 is a good deal if it has LESS shaft play than your original one.

Does sound like turbo to me, like previously said 1/4 can damage parts not included in the rebuild kit. The smoking on startup concerns me though, what kind of valve seals did you use on the rebuild? What are you using s far as tuning?

Sounds like the turbo.
Is the turbo oil drain line clear of any strange bends or obstructions ? A cloged drain will make the oil back up and over run the seals.
Also you can remove the o2 housing and if its all chocked up and oily it's the seal.

If the pvc valve is clooged or block it can cause smoke.

Also a cracked piston ringland will smoke like a bandit under boost and under hard vaccumm.

i rebuilt the turbo cause i was ignorant, and didn't know. but i do now. and ive already got a oil catch can. when i put the motor together again, it got brand new ARP everything. and a all new gasket kit. i threw on a buddies 14b, and it ran like a champ, absoltuly now oil. so it 100% the turbo. i got a new once ordered. Thanks for all your help guys! :thumb:
