I've got a 97 eclipse GST. Car ran great before I tried doin the head gasket a few weeks ago. I am not new to Workin on cars by any means but this dsm is throwing me for loops big time. The first attempt at reinstalling the timing belt it jumped big time wen i pulled the tensioner n ended up needing a head rebuild so took it to abacus picked it up a week n a half later put it all back together was extra careful with the timing n everytime I rechecked it was dead on. It still wouldn't start so i tried sprayin starter fluid in the intake n got a really loud backfire so i figured I wasn't on the compression stroke so i tried again today got it all exact n it starts but sounds really back like its got a really bad intake leak n timing is way off n then dies. Please help I'm about to just push it out of the garage n blow it up!

Can you get us a picture of the crank and cam gears at top dead center? If you weren't so far away, I would lend you a hand.

I'm having some trouble understanding what you're saying.....

When you said "got it all exact," are you talking about the timing marks? Did you got to vfaq.com and follow the procedure for the timing belt change? Did you re-attach the connectors for all of the sensors?

When you re-installed the T-belt did you follow the procedures to the letter?
Recheck your timing marks. It's possible that it's off a tooth.
Another thing to take into consideration, if the balance shaft are still installed, make sure that they are in phase.

An out of phase B-shaft will make the car run like shit and show symptoms similar to being badly out of time.
