DETROIT (May 6) -- Hummer owners, frustrated with the vehicle's excessive fuel consumption, ranked the SUV last in a benchmark poll of vehicle quality, according to a survey released by J.D. Power and Associates on Tuesday.

In the group's annual survey of consumers during the first 90 days of ownership, General Motors Corp.'s highly profitable Hummer brand had 225 complaints per 100 vehicles. By comparison, the top-ranked Lexus, by Toyota Motor Corp., had 76 complaints per 100 vehicles.

Gary Cowger, president of GM North America, said the H2's fuel consumption was the No. 1 complaint among owners, outpacing the No. 2 gripe -- that the SUV's headlights were aimed too high -- by a 2-1 margin. GM has fixed the headlight problem, Cowger said.

At 6,400 pounds (2,903 kg), the Hummer H2 is so heavy it falls outside U.S. regulations on fuel economy. Unlike other passenger cars and trucks, GM does not have to display the gas mileage on the window sales sticker of the H2 at dealerships. Hummer estimates the military-inspired SUV gets 11 to 13 miles (18 to 21 km) per gallon.

J.D. Power conducted its survey of 52,000 U.S. owners and lessees earlier this year when the price of gas spiked higher.

"There's a very close correlation between the price of gasoline at the pump and the incidence of excessive fuel consumption problems," Brian Walters, director of product research with J.D. Power, told Reuters.

Hummer's thirst for gas certainly has not hurt sales. Hummer is the only GM division that has sold vehicles this year without costly sales incentives, such as the zero percent financing offer that has swept the industry.

Im sorry, but if you can afford to go out and buy a brand new Hummer, you sure as hell can afford gas for it! What did they expect when they bought it?!? They obviously should have known it wont be as fuel efficient as their family sedan. No matter what, people must bi*** about something..... maybe its ignorance:rolleyes:

The H2 is a disgrace to all off road vehicles. It is pitiful performance wise, as if those who own it even bought it for what it was intended. The original Hummer blows it out of the watter...anyone into 4-wheeling knows exactly what I'm talking about. It's a good thing the H3 is already in the works, because once the hype over the H2 dies down....no one will give a shit about it. Too bad the H3 will be just as bad if not worse than the H2 though.

I agree...11 to 13 miles/gal...My f-250 w/a 460 and a towing package got better gas mileage than that! It's ugly, too heavy and shouldn't even be considered an SUV...Bring back the original dammit

Woohoo I think I'll buy me a tank to drive around town, then mabe I can get enough yuppies to make this mainstream.

That might be true, but the original Hummer is too wide for most off-road trails around here and thus makes for a pretty useless recreational off-road vehicle :). H2 looks cooler (for what it is worth LOL and much more practical.

But is 11-13 mph that bad? My Durango averages around 12-13. And I know many others who get 11-12. So I am not sure what is their gripe.

Also agreed! My step fathers F-150 only has the 4.6L and gets about 10 mpg. Cant wait to see how that drops when the super chargers installedOMG

I notice alot of people says the new hummer is ugly, but the hummer was always ugly IMO.

Hummer was never pretty but the H1 one was a mean lookin vehicle

Gas mileage, whats that mean? We fill up at every gas station we see. This bad boy gets us a whopping 8 miles to the gallon. But it'll pull a house off its foundation and floats over everything when off roading.

I bet the ones complaining are the ones who try to drive the thing on a "daily" basis, which is not what its meant to do. I saw two of them things in traffic a few cars behind each other, one was red, the other was white. If they can afford that big azz truck, they can afford the gas for it. I dont think GM cares that people are complaining, because they are gonna sell regardless.

Its an "look at me im cool" image type of vehicle. Celebs will continue to buy them, and so will the average joe living in a apartment, paying a 200k house note on the thing will too.

Ours sits in the garage most of the time. It comes out to pull the trailer to shows and for occasional off road use. They are NOT the most comfortable things in the world either, but when we got it, we went in expecting it to not be used daily and to use a lot of gas. It serves its purpose.

I agree. My 01 Ranger 4.0 gets a blistering 12mpg. OMG :D

You want an offroad vehicle? Get a Jeep Wrangler; light, plenty of clearance, decent payload capacity, and an incredible aftermarket for when you break things. ;) You want an on-road vehicle to carry the kids to soccer? Get a Dodge Caravan; decent gas milage, plenty of room for you and all your spawn, and all without completely blocking the view of other traffic on the road.

I live in the heart of suburbia where people have an excess of income. Every other vehicle is some minivan-inspired SUV, usually with a center of balance that should inspire fear in anyone who runs offroad at all, with a tiny little woman at the wheel, talking on her cellular phone while trying to get her three kids to stop jumping back and forth between the front seat and the back seat. Notice the lovely body damage on all four corners?

Now, they're starting to drive Excursions and H2s, and I'm scared. Honestly and truly scared. These schmucks can't drive a smaller SUV properly; now I'm supposed to share the road with a 6400lb house on wheels driven by someone who gives new meaning to the phrase "distracted driver"? Ye ghods. Forget about the arguments about them not needing something that big, or not needing any kind of "offroad-capable" vehicle in general. I'm worried about that monster hitting me when Mary-Kate interrupts mommy's important phone call.

Bah. Rant over.

Umm, but you're not complaining about it...you understand that a Dodge Dakota with a 5.9L engine slugs down gas. This thread is dedicated to the numbnuts out there that bishes when the rolling zipcode doesn't get as much on a tank as the old Camry did.

 Rolling Zip Code.....
That's gotta be the funniest way to name a huge-ass Excursion with a 5' blonde suck....err... I mean soccer mom...

I also like how their husbands explain buying those cars for their wifes:
"Er... I just want her to be safe ya know...". So what if she flattens half of the city block while doing her make-up using that nice Extra-large rear vew/makeup mirror, poundering why men even call it rear-view mirror at all

I'm frustrated with the fact that my Talon doesn't seat 5 comfortably too.

Stupid house-cows and their "need" for oversized SUVs to pick up groceries with.

There's nothing special about them at all, it is the exact same thing as driving any other SUV, felt just like my Explorer XLT except it had smooth shifting auto tranny.

Frankly anyone who complains about fuel consumption on a Hummer is a DUMBASS! What the hell did you think they were gonna do? Some people expect the same milage from a H2 as a Prius or some other electrical car???

The 2004 H3 that is in the works will sell for around $35,000 and will be based on the Chevy Trailblazer platform.

Also they are going to produce a 2004 H2 SUT. Yes just like the Esclade Trucks.
