i belw the engine in the 98 gsx and got a rebuilt from ATk, but they sent they wrong one, i have found the vin# on the block (4A3AK54F9WE84....) but how do i find out what head is on it?
the cam position sensor was on the pulley side.

There is only one engine that came in a 98 GSX, and that was a turbo 4G63. If what you have isn't a 4G63, you might want to call whoever sent you the motor. There's really only 2 cylinder heads you can use...either the factory 2G head, or you can upgrade to a 1G head. There really aren't too many possibilities.

the block was from a 98 gst but the head is where i am not sure because the cam position sensor was on the pulley side not the rear, where it should of been for a 98 gst. i guess when atk rebuilt the engine they just put the sensor on the wrong side.

It isn't possible to put the CAM sensor on the wrong side of the head. It only goes on one way. It sounds like you have the wrong cylinder head. I have a 1G head I'll sell you that's been machined and blasted if you're interested:D I had to throw that out there.... Just out of curiosity, what does the valve cover look like?? Something just doesn't make sense.

that's not entirely true, the head that was shipped on the 98 gst block the cam position sensor was on the pulley side, pulled the valve cover replaced the intake cam so that it was drilled and tap to accecpt the sensor housing on the rear of the engine, installed a position sensor housing and the cam pulley. and that's it the cam position sensor went from front to back. so ATK could of done the same when rebuiling the engine. What i am wondering is from 1995 to 4/1997 the 4G63 was built w/ the cam sensor on the pulley side, so is there any way to figure out if i recieve a head from a 1995-4/1997 or a 1998 w/the cam position sensor just mounted on the wrong side.
