the only reason i see that you would fail emissions is if you run the test with the cutout open.....but i guess i wouldn't know too much about that here in iowa where there is no emissions tests.

Alot of states inspections stations run mirrors under the car, and might not like the look of that cutout.

I am bringing this thread back to ask some more questions.

I have found from my search that the 50-trim vs. EVO III 16g has been covered many times over, but my situation is unique. So with that said....

Anyone think I would be better going with a larger turbo while I am spending all of this money?

What about a 50 trim ($699 or $130 more than the EVO III 16G)?

http://www.slowboyracing.com/more.php?id=9&

I didn't know that 50 trims were so cheap :sneaky: !

Would it be a waste of time/money with the SMIC and stock cat back?

Would the 190lph FP and 660cc injectors be enough for the 50-trim?

I didn't know if lower boost on a larger turbo would be better with the SMIC than higher boost on the EVO III 16G. Mainly because of the increase in compressor efficiency with the larger turbo. I have also read that it will solve some of my traction problems.

Also, I plan on running this exclusively on pump gas. I have read that the 50-trim is the "pump gas king".

Any suggestions?

I personally think 16g turbos are -anemic-, I read about people getting rid of them after they build a -tolerance- for them.

And I read about people running 12s with much larger turbos than a 16G. Those turbos must be -anemic-, too. :boring: The Evo III 16G is hardly anemic. When properly modified, a DSM or Evo with a 16G can belt out over 400hp to the wheels.

Back on topic, I wouldn't run either turbo with a stock exhaust. You are modding your car in the wrong order. First get the exhaust, then get the turbo. If you bolt up a 50-trim to a car with a stock exhaust, the lag is going to be intolerable. And the kick that the Evo III 16G gives you just wouldn't be there.

I already stated earlier in the thread that I have no plans to upgrade the cat back. I do have an upgraded DP and Hi-Flow Cat. But the stock cat back is there to stay. I realize that I am going to be costing myself HP and increasing the turbo lag with the stock cat back and I am prepaired to make that sacrifice.

So, taking into consideration that I am not going to upgrade the cat back....what do you think?

Thanks!

What's the point then? You're just going to be wasting your money. It's pointless to upgrade your turbo if you're not going to properly upgrade your car to handle that extra power the turbo would give you.

If you're not going to upgrade your exhaust you might as well look into buying bodykits and such.

If you just aren't going to budge on the catback, I'd get the 16G, no doubt.

I have the Evo III 16G on my car and it is an absolute blast. I'm aiming for 120mph out of the thing.

A good quality cat-back like an RSR won't increase the noise from your car all that much, btw. Mine was very quiet til I removed the 2 resonators. And with a cat on the car, it would be incredibly quiet.

I think people will not know exactly how to reply to you because they don't have any point of reference to tell you how a 50 trim will respond to a stock cat back. Most of the answers will be guesses.

My guess is that you would probably be happier with the EVO. Running lower boost with the stock side mount seems to be better suited to the EVO. It will be more effiecient down there.

They call the 50 trim the "pump gas king" because it is most efficient at a boost level that pump gas will still not detonate at. Smaller turbos are above their peak efficiency at this level of boost, larger turbos are below their sweet spot.

Thank you for a reply with such useful information. I am upgrading my car so it suits me, not you. I would appreciate if you have nothing useful to say, don't waste my time or yours replying to this thread.

With that said,

Thanks SethA. I figured that no one would have any first hand experience running a larger turbo with a stock cat back, as most people upgrade the exhaust as mod #1 or #2. I appreciate your reply, it is the type of information I was hoping for.

I am trying to get members opinions on what they "think" might come of a 50-trim on a stock cat back and SMIC.

To anser your questions:
Would it be a waste of time/money with the SMIC and stock cat back?

Yes, you will be restricting the output of the 50 trim with a stock exhaust. Look at the upgrade path, all of them say you should upgrade exhaust and FMIC before a BIG turbo.

Would the 190lph FP and 660cc injectors be enough for the 50-trim?

No. You'll need the 255 pump. I don't know about the 660ccs for the 50 trim, so I won't say anything. :thumb:
