toronto,
Hey guys, for my entrepreneurial studies class we were asked to come up with an idea that would be both; good for the community, and also have the potential to make profit. I have chosen to design a local drag strip, as there arent any within a 2 hours radius of my area.
What i'm asking is some input from anyone who may be able to add on to anyhting I missed which is important to a drag strip. here is my list as of now....

Road Leading in to track, Parking Lot, Trailer entrance, Gas bar, garages, Some sort of performance shop, Drag strip, staging area, starting tree, time boards, run off area, strip leading back from run off area, medical attendants, fire attendants.....

I'm sure I am missing many things here as It has been years since my last visit to a race track, and any input would be so greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Insurance. Truckloads of liability insurance. Local zoning issues would need to be addressed, and you'd probably need signoff from local government (city, county, etc), who would probably require at least an impact study and would want community input. Legal costs for putting together waivers that have a hope in hell of standing up in court, along with a decent accounting firm to handle the books. Utility issues: will what you're doing require additional work by the local utility companies to support it (power, gas, water, sewer, etc). Advertising, marketing expenses. Coming up with creative means of using your facility as an advertising vehicle for additional revenue. NHRA or similar memberships/affiliations. Etc, etc, etc.

Remember: building a business is more than just doing the work you want to do. :)

thanks for the input, i will most definitely have to address the insurance, and gas issue in my presentation, also I can use the means of advertising as a money making endeavour for my presentation.
so thanks alot, any one else?

If you were really going to do it, scope your area for an abandoned or lightly-used airstrip. They're usually zoned for the noise factor (I don't know how much that sort of thing matters in Canada), and if it's either a private strip or one that gets little use, it might be perfect for it. Point out on the plus side the safety factor for the punks who'd be street racing instead of dragging.

They tried building one here. They got all their sh*t together, they had land donated and a tree. They got offered free concrete and people to build it. But then the county bought a privately owned speedway so there went my chance. They put all the money into that instead.

how about some sort of inspection station. To make sure the cars are legal on street legal racing nights. Not a necessity just something to think about.
