For those that have been in the DSM game awhile, you know something ALWAYS happens right before a dyno session or race event. Well the past two week were no different for me.

I had a dyno appointment with the new setup on September 5th. Everything was going well until we got above 35 psi and my power was hitting a wall above 8400 rpms. It did not sound like it was missing and the tuner stated the A/F's were good so he continued on. On the third pull (40 psi), water went everywhere and the room was filled with white smoke. I get home and pull the head to find this:
    Damage.jpg

There was even a little extra material on the block (believe its melted material from the MLS HG) so I did not feel comfortable putting in my spare head and running it.

Fast forward to September 11th, I was scrolling Facebook and saw a friend of mine just listed some of his built DSM parts for sale which included a built long block with Howard I beams, Wiseco E85 10:1 pistons and built for 40+ psi by one of the best engine shops. He agreed to sell it to me for $2,000 which I thought was a steal considering the machining alone was $1,400.

So I pick the block up on the 12th and plan to throw it in on the Friday the 13th (Ya it was a risky day to do that). I wrench all day swapping some of my head parts in to the new head and my friend who I bought it from comes to help at 9PM as I needed to race the next day. We get it all install around 6AM Saturday, I load the car up and we head up to BIR!

I put the 30 PSI tune on the car and added 3% fuel across the board to be safe with the higher compression. I make my qualifying pass and the car feels great! I let off at the 3/4 mark and hit the brakes (No cage) and ran an 11.6.

Following day is eliminations. My first three races were not very close but in the finals I lined up against a Tesla Model X 100D which was running mid to low 11s all day. He got the jump and we were side by side until I hit third where I pulled passed him to take the win!

    Win.jpg

I couldn't be happier with how it turned out and how the car performed as the engine had only been installed for 24 hours. There are a few hiccups ( I will start a different tech page for) that I need to work out and looking at getting a cage with upgrading the fuel system this winter so we can run the 40 PSI tune to get this car moving!

Long post but I had to share the DSM struggle to victory story!

Love the story, seems familiar with DSM's but see how it all worked out for you?
    Got any dyno numbers? :)

It was a grind but worth it in the end! The 30 PSI tune was around 400 awhp on a dyno dynamic. The turbo really woke up above 35 PSI and it was at 500 awhp when it popped. On the dyno the "e85" I had was actually e70 which I did not like but the tuner said it was fine. I put in 3 gallons of 110 at teh track to raise it so I would be on the safe side.

Engine install on Friday the 13th? Sigh, some people don’t have any sense. I give the engine 10 miles til it explodes.

I was just waiting for @Vegas smith to chime in about Friday the 13th and I was right. :p
Anything over E50 and my motor ran the same on the Red Talon. I also noticed big gains for every 1 psi over 35lbs. The car was an absolute monster at 40 psi.

I didn't have an option! Believe it or not, the car is running better than ever. It hasn't made it 10 miles yet so that is still a possibility but it made five runs down the track so it's a start!

Once I get the fuel upgraded it will go back up to 40psi which I can't wait for.

Loved the story too! Reminded me of Roadkill or one of those shows. Wrenching into the night to get the win. Congratulations, and way to stick it to that smug Tesla!

Here is a cell phone video of the final race. Don't worry, I already had a talk with the better half to take a video from up in the bleachers next time!

Awesome story! I’m curious what was your timing when it popped? I’m running the same boost on a rebuilt stock block LOL

Great question, the tuner "lost" the logs for the last three runs. I can check the tune file he gave me for the 40 psi to see what the timing table looks like. I believe it was the lean condition that caused the detonation but the knock sensor should have been going nuts far before it exploded.

Wow that stinks, sounds like you made out better tho with this new motor:hellyeah: And holy cow 40 psi must feel nuts! I’m around 35 on my dsm82, I keep the afr’s fat and timing conservative, I need s better trans and better valvetrain before I rev that high, I only go 7200-7500, but the power band is still fun on the street, I LOVE this turbo! Congrats again on your car:hellyeah:

I am going to use a couple remote tuners I know and begin the process of learning to tune myself. While I’m learning I will keep the timing down and stay on the richer side u til I figure my stuff out. The video watching shall begin haha
