My car's hood and bumper have looked pretty damn bad for years. Tons of chips due to a poor refinish before I purchased the car and then daily driving in PA winters took its toll.

I got a cheap Husky gun from Home Depot as a Christmas present 2 years ago, but just took it out of the box this past week. I think it came out pretty damn sweet for my first time. There are 4 or 5 little dust nibs in the hood and the clear sagged in one spot on the bumper. Other than that, I'm happy!

I thought it was going to be a total failure once I started laying down the base coat. The gun was clogging and I took it apart and cleaned it at least 8 times during the application of base coat. It kept clogging and then it wanted to spray out like a hose. Eventually it started working and all was good.

Let me know what you think, I love monarch green pearl. Sorry they're phone pics, I'll take some better pics soon. Thanks for the paint Justin!

Nice job, thats an awsome color. I painted my 95 gst in my garage with my buddy and I must say It feels good and looks great. Keep up the good work!

I've been wanting to start painting all my cars one by one in a garage with plastic sheets hung up. I've been reluctant as that's kind of a ghetto method LOL. Looks like it came out great though! You got me all motivated :)

Thanks guys, it turned out as good as I could have hoped for being a 1st try. I'm not sure why the gun was giving me issues with the base coat. It would clog then next time it would spray out like a stream. I eventually got it working, it may have been the plumbing tape I put on the can and the air valve screw. :idontknow:
I also sprayed without the little filter that comes with the gun. At first I just plain forgot to put it in, then when I did, it didn't seem to help and I didn't know if I had it in right because there was no diagram or even mention of it in the manual.

What isn't a ghetto method unless it's a real paint booth? I also used 2 furnace filters, one in the garage window, and one in the opposite corner in the bottom of the plastic sheet. I had a fan running on the outside of that filter to pull fresh air through and trap paint in the filter. Homemade downdraft booth.
It was the best thing I could come up with.

Looks great for a first time dude! I'm new to painting to and have done my skirts & hood. Perhaps thinning the paint a little bit would prevent clogging in the future.

I did add a little extra reducer... twice. It was infuriating, I was ready to swing the gun around by the air hose and launch it into a tree. :)

Looks great man, Did you by any chance have a air regulator on the gun, or were you just using the one on the compressor. Sometimes the compressor is too much flow and it dies off at times making it hard to spray evenly.

Great job though

There is an air regulator built into the gun. I had the regulator at the compressor set at 40-43 psi. I didn't fuss with the regulator on the gun much because it seemed to work best fully open.

If it is an hvlp gun they usually run at about 12-15psi when the trigger is pulled far enough to move air but not far enough to flow paint.

Painting cars can be an infuriating process... especially with guns that don't want to work right. We used 3 different guns to spray my car. One for primer, one for color, one for clear. And those little strainers, atleast on our guns, can only go in one way. If it's "upside down" I can't get the cup screwed on right. Looks fantastical for your first go at it though. :)

Yes, it's an hvlp. This is the gun, it came in a kit with 2 tips, cleaning tools, extra filters, etc.

I'd rather do it myself at home to my satisfaction AND save money, be it guetto in some peoples opinion or not than pay someone the big bucks for a job that I can do myself..but thats just me
