are there any other engines compatible in my 95 RS. I am having trouble finding a 420A motor and am looking for possible solutions. My rockers seem to be bad and make a really loud ticking/knocking sound, what kind of damage does this cause if they are left unfixed for a while. I guess this has been happening for a while but Ive only had the car for a about a month and they just all of a sudden got worse today. Someone told me that they might just need to be adjusted. Are the rockers on these cars adjustable?

It is called lifter tick. It is common on every high mileage car. Do a search on it, i believe someone said to put a cap full of auto tranny fluid in when you change your oil. You could take the long, and hard road of swapping in the 4g63T engine.

its more than just lifter tick, its more of a loud ass knock when at a constant rpm. I also heard on this site that it could be a throwout bearing?

In the 420A They had a common problem usually after 70-80 thousand miles, the rods had a tendencie to stretch. This would cause the bearing caps to ob-long and cause knocking. Or worse, take out the head too.

finally something that seems to fit my problem. I have 88,000 miles on it so that seems about right. should I just replace the rods, bearings, and caps to fix this problem? It doesnt knock at all at an idle I figured it would if it were something with the rods. What are some other signs of this happening? Also is it safe to drive, even at a low speed? I dont have a job right now and I cant afford to fix this problem until I get one and need my car to drive to interviews.

Your best bet would be to make sure that this is the problem, First check your compression and see if it's consistant across the 4 cylinders. If not then start looking around for the cheaspest prices for a complete rebuild including new rods. Hope this helps!!
Just make sure that you troubleshoot everything before get into a major overhaul. I can't be sure that this is your problem because I'm not there listining to the noise.

yeah Im doing a compression test this weekend so then i will know for sure if it needs a rebuild. Ive checked everything visible with the valve cover off to see if anything loose or overly worn and didnt find anything. thanks for all the help!

Neons also have a 420A engine. The only differences are that #1 it's installed backwards in a neon and #2 it has more aggressive cams. I know the 95-98's have 420a's. I'm not sure if any other years do.

well I guess I will have to look into it. since I just threw a rod through the side of my engine block. thanks for all the help

I have a rebuilt block for a 420a and 2 heads for it too heads need some work (couple bent valves) let me know if you want them:thumb:

Im goin to look around to make sure I cant find any engines that are closer to me but if I cant find one I will let you know.

i just had the same problem and i had to replace the engine. i used the neon block and all the internals of the head. its worked perfect and now i am getting more HP. not much but some. look into that it will work. and the complete neon engine will work you will have to redue ur exhaust. that is the only mod u will have to do to your car. good luck and if u need any more help with that just pm me and i will be glad to help
