Engine Question

I have a friend who has a '99 Eclipse RS. I guess the timing belt snap or jump and her mechanic tells her the HG needs to be replaced and valves. She has asked me to do the work instead.

I'm looking to swap in a motor from the a 95 Eclipse GS. Are they the same? Will it be a direct drop in?

I put a 99 motor in my 96 gs and the only problem I had was that I had to splice the 99 sensor plug ends onto my harness.Other then that everything bolted right up.

Direct swap. Just pull all the sensors off the 99 and put them on the 95. There was a switch in the 96 year to different style plugs etc. But if you just use existing out of the 99, you'll be fine (yes that includes coil ).

Don't forget this is a good time to do timing components and water pump.

I don't know about you but I'm not too savvy on using pistons that have had the tops gouged by valves.... stress fractures turn pistons into grenades in a hurry....

This ^ from experience. Those then pistonless rods like to dig their way into the cylinder walls too. If the pistons where forged I might think about it but cast is cast and visual inspections sometimes arn't enough to catch fractures.

Yeah, If the timing belt jumped and the mechanic things valves are toast, I'm not going to reuse the bottom end. Easier and cheaper to just drop in a replacement motor.

its only worth it if the replacement motor is in decent shape and is under 90,000miles depending on how well the motor was taken care of. if you can afford to buy a long block from a decent company,and your droppin it in yourself,I think thats the way to go.
