I'm starting to shop for an evo3 16g. It's an off the shelf turbo, so it seems like it should be a pretty easy process. But the more I start looking, the more confusing the process seems to become. Forced Performance has it for $599 + $90 for porting, which comes to $689. Slowboy has it for $599 + $60 for porting the turbine inlet and $60 for porting the turbine outlet, which also comes to $689. But is FP's porting both inlet and outlet? Then there's a place called Extereme PSI that has them for $620 ported and shipped. I know porting isn't exactly brain surgery, but does it matter that much who does it between the more reputable shops? There's also the umpteen other places that carry this turbo.

Just this porting issue seems confusing. Then you've got to get into the 2G install kits, take inventory of what each kit includes, figure out what else I might need, try and decide who has the nicest looking j-pipe, oil feed line, etc, etc. Help!

porting of the turbine outlet really isnt all that necessary. The flange of most o2 housings even on a 2.5" o2 housing is still only 2" for the outlet. It really wont make much of a difference who ports it, because many times, the vendor isnt the one porting it. So dont worry so much about that.

I got mine unported from Slowboy. I didn't want faster spool up anyway. The braided steel oil feed line I got from RRE looks real good, but the FP j-pipe and RRE L pipe I have are pretty dull. One day I'll go in and try to make some nice pretty pipes when I do my FMIC upgrade, but they get the job done.

It's VERY easy to do your own porting, as long as you are patient.

If it can save you 90+ dollars, I say give it a shot. Just start out conservative. :thumb:

I've got a 3" O2 eliminator downpipe, so I might benefit a bit more from the turbine outlet porting.

I autocross, so spool is really important to me. I don't think the start is nearly as important as it is in drag racing. You usually go about 20' before you even trip the lights, and the beginning is usually pretty tight, so you wouldn't want to go WOT even if wheelspin wasn't an issue.

I know the inlet porting helps spool. Does the outlet porting serve the same purpose, or is it more to help boost creep?

Then you'll never blow another 7cm gasket again.

I didn't realize this was an issue. Have a lot of other people had this problem?

This is true. I did the same thing. And it's fun, honestly it is.

its not an issue. I dont know anyone blowing out 3 layer metal 7cm gaskets personally. If you do, your a freak. The port jobs will really be the same. Porting is porting. Theyres no real art to it, anyone can do it. So if you want both ported, get both ported.

My Evo3 manifold is ported and I have a 3" O2 Eliminator DP, 3" test pipe and Apex'i N-1. I don't get any boost creep and its set at 17psi. I also have the 34mm flapper mod. The turbo spools at the perfect time for me being that I still have an open diff. Maybe I'll want faster spool later, but I don't think so.

There is someting about that ebay turbo I don't like. Something about it looks different than normal. The compressor cover looks dull compared to standard TD05 compressor housings. The wastegate has an adjustable rod on it, which sounds great but means non-stock. The turbine housing is stamped A/R .70. Mitsubishi uses squared centimeters. The turbine wheel looks all wrong too, the cast nut on the turbine shaft doesn't look right, neither do the turbine blades. They also claim "BRAND NEW IN THE BOX, MADE BY STONE RACING CORPORATION. That should read "BRAND NEW IN THE BOX, MADE BY MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries). I'd be careful with that one.

What it should say is "Made in China"... it is not an MHI turbo.... BUYER BEWARE OF IMITATIONS.

MGH

"The internals use a high flowing turbine stage complimenting an extremely efficient TB03 compressor stage rated at 36lbs/min."

Huh? I'd have to agree that you should be careful buying this. There have been numerous complaints about that company as well.

I read on a local forum about someone who bought the same turbo from the same company off of an EBay auction, they said nothing, but bad things. I would stay away from that turbo even if it was only $300.

damn im glad i read here before winning that auction

im dayne411...the previous high bidder of that turbo...someone outbid me at the last second thank god

god bless forums

that turbo is fake, peice of shit. ANYTHING FROM SSAUTOCHROME IS GARBAGE. i never knew mitsubishi had there evo316g made by stone racing... LOL What a Joke. I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING CRITCAL FROM EBAY, 99percent is garbage,

Buy it Right, Buy it once.. BUY IT FROM A VENDOR, You will get the real item..

Sometimes trying to save 100 bucks, will cost you many times more....

OK, let's get off the ebay/chineese turbo discussion, and get the thread back on track.

question for Slowboy: You guys seem be one of the only vendors whose 2G install kit includes the LICP. The T25 compressor outlet points towards the passenger side of the vehicle. Just a J-pipe on a 16G will point straight towards the ground, correct? So if I'm going to use the stock SMIC, I'll need at a minimum an L-shaped pipe of some sort to plumb it in the right direction if I didn't get the LICP, right? Also, what is your opinion on the benefits of a ported turbine outlet with a 3" O2 eliminator DP? What can you tell me about your 16G with 2G install kit that would make me want to buy it from you over others?

I emailed FP to find out what the $90 porting included, and haven't heard from them.

I'm still sitting the fence on if I want to attempt porting myself. I don't have a die grinder, so if I go electric I'm going to spend about as much on the grinder and bits as I would just getting it done. Granted, I will then own a die grinder, but I don't know how much other use I'd get out of it. If I go with a cheap air powered grinder, I'm then buying a compressor that costs in the hundreds (been kinda wanting to get one anyway though). Boy, this turbo upgrade is getting more and more expensive!

OK.. porting the turbine outlet helps reduce back pressure, same concept as putting a larger exhaust on the car.. The ideal situation is to have the O2 housing port matched to the outlet for the most performance gains. Now Jim in your situation, With the 3" O2 eliminator, I would definately port the outlet b/c the that housing is larger than the Turbine. having a matched fit will increase flow after the turbine wheel and also helps spool up time with your set up!

now on a side note. it was mentioned we had the EVO 16g for 599.00 plus the porting charges... Its actually 569.00 plus the $60.00 for each porting option.. so its actually $40.00 less than what was posted..
Thanks.. Jim i hope that helps your question

Thanks
