Difference between lickter tick and rod knock?

I'm pretty sure it's my lifters ticking, but I just want to make sure it's nothing worse. It started doing it when my oil got pretty low, and it would do it when I first start the car, but it tends to go away after it warms up. Any explanations on the differences between the 2 would be great..

probably lifter tick. Before I threw my rod the noise got louder as the engine warmed up to running temp.Also when I revved it up to about 3,000 rpm and held it there for a couple of seconds it would knock like hell.

Well, the ticking really does go, "tiktiktiktiktiktiktik" while a rod is more of a "klak klak klak".
To find out for sure, get hold of an engine stethescope.
