I've got a 92 Laser, A/T, non-turbo. Yesterday the motor destroyed itself (which I expected since it had been knocking for a while), so I am just going to get a used longblock for my car. anyway...

My friend needs a 7 bolt block for his turbo build (96 tsi AWD) that he is in the middle of.

My laser was made 4/7/92. Assuming my block isnt damaged, can will my bare block work for my friend's project? Or are there differences between the turbo and non-turbo block?

The turbo block has oil squirters that the N/T block doesn't. A machine shop can add them, or I have heard of people using the N/T block with out them and just relying on tuning. YMMV.

ok, I have also read about people eliminating the squirters on not only 4g63's, but other motors as well.

Here are a few more Q's...

For my 92 laser (A/T, NT), I am looking for the cheapest way to get this thing running again. The cheapest longblock I can find locally is $750.00 and it has 94K. On ebay I have found a bunch of JDM motors for $525.00 (35K or less) and shipping is $195.00.

Now, the description says for Mitsubishi Eclipse 89-94. I have always been under the impression that eclipse and laser motors were identical, but I also dont know the difference between the JDM and USDM 4g63s (if there are any). So I guess I would much rather go with the JDM motor from ebay if I know I can get it to work in my laser. Thanks in advance for any more information.

Are you sure that I need those??? I am trying to decide which one (JDM/USDM) to get. Obviously the JDM one is going to be better, but I dont really want to buy a new tranny etc to get it to work. Please help. Thanks.

so the question remains...do I need anything special to put in a JDM n/t 4g63 in a 92 laser A/T (flexplate and torque converter as bastarddsm said) because the motor in the car now is a 7 bolt, and the JDM's are 6??????????

i would look around some more locally, do you have any u-pull-it junkyards around? we have one close and you can get a longblock for 150-175.

There are TONS of junkyards around here and I called every one of them. Only two had them, they wanted like 950 or 1050. I found one an hour and a half away for 750. I think I am going to go ahead and order the JDM motor. After I removed and completely stripped the current motor in the laser I discovered a few things.

1- the short block was already a junkyard motor
2- I think all I would need if I got a 6 bolt motor is a 6 bolt flexplate (assuming both torque converters bolt up using three evenly spaced bolts)
3- the motor that was in there had a severly damaged main crank bearing, which I think is what was causing the knocking. And all the valves bent from the timing belt skipping, which I dont know why that happened.

FYI, after I was told on here that my 92 block would replace the 97 turbo block, I stripped the block and compared it to the 97 block and there are several differences between my block and his cracked 97 block, making my 92 block unuseable for his project. Thanks for the info anyway.

Shops use the term "JDM" to squeeze more money out of the Honduh and F&F lovers. The Japan and US DSM are the SAME CAR. They were ALL manufactured in Normal, IL. The only difference is the Japan models lack the emissions plumbing the US models have. Save your money.

Ummm, well yeah. You have a 6-bolt block to his 7, he would have to do the conversion to do the swap.
