hey guys, i had an idea and was just woundering if it was worth a try, ive got a 92 eclipse gs and for a cold are intake i was thinking about taking a eclipse turbo side mount intercooler and get some alum piping and find a way to mount the intercooler in the front air dam and run my piece of piping off one end to my air filter and the other end to my throttle body, i mean if you think about it the idea of the intercooler is to cool the air from the turbo before it hits the cumbustion chamber to decrease detination, wouldnt it cool the air being sucked in from the air filter passing through the intercooler and into the intake manifold the same? just a wild little idea i had and i think i just might try it, couldnt hurt much, thanks

yeah...but they don't make cold air intakes for a 1st Gen eclipse.

or so i thought. maybe i've just been looking in all the wrong places :D

In theory it would probably cool the air a lot. But the question is that would the engine have enough vacuum to pull the air through the intercooler and be efficient enough to gain anything from it? I do have an extra intercooler layin around and it sounds like a good idea if it would work. You would have to really extend the mass air sensor or get a different one like a GM?

yea they make cold air intakes for 1g but if i can mount this side mount intercooler right in front like you would mount a front mount intercooler, the air would be MUCH cooler than a regular cold air intake, atleast i think it would, in getting as much hp out of this all motor setup that i can, and if i do this i can do an intercooler sprayer to wich would be cool and safe hp

wow! like someone said in theory that would work. Please let me kno tho LOL, i have a cai and i would definetly be interested in this new set up. Thanks

im going to go ahead and try my project and see how it works, it should be to much longer before i get an side mount intercooler from an 1g turbo and clean it up real good and find my piping and see how she runs, shouldnt be anything other than good results though, i can only hope, later

So, you want to take ambient air, run it through an intercooler that has ambient air flowing across it. Where do you dream any cooling will be coming from?
Intercoolers are getting 250°F air coming into them from the compressor, being cooled by outside air.
All an intercooler will do for you is restrict your intake air.

Wax the car instead.

the air that will be sucked in throught the filter down the alum piping into the intercooler then cooled even more by the outside air ramming into the intercooler and then the cooler air will be sent out of the intercooler into the intake manifold, but the only way to truly find out is try it and it should cost that much so if it isnt as good as a regular cold air intake then no big deal i just go buy a injen cold air intake

In my opinion it doesn't really sound like it would work that well. It MIGHT help at top end going down the highway. But it would just restrict air flow like Defiant said. I'm no expert, so I'm not posative. Just seems like a waste of time to me.. Just build a custom CAI out of PVC then make some kind of scoop that goes under the front bumper to scoop more air in. Honestly why use an intercooler?? Just my .02 cents

hey guys its just a project i was thinking about, nothing major, and the cold air thing witht he scoop i already thought about, but i mean thats how you come up with good things is you try em out, later guys thanks for your opinions

But you seem to be missing an important step here: the air coming in the intake is the _same_ temperature as the air on the "outside". You don't have anything to cool, because it's not warmer. Aluminum piping doesn't have any cooling properties, it's the same temperature as the room it's in (or, out of).
A "cold air intake" doesn't do anything to "cool" the air, it's just taking air from outside the engine compartment, away from the warmth of the engine.

take out the useless plastic intercoler, make the old intercooler holes bigger so u can add a 3-5inches custon flexible alum pipe from home depot and it will serve as cold ram air...or, sealed ur air mass with alum pipe and use an extension flexible pipe to do cold air ram intake underneat ur front bumper...just an idea..good luck.
