CEL never activated

This may seem silly but I have to question how I have never had a CEL come on in the 12+ years that I have owned my Tsi. I certainly have had problems with boost, turbo dying etc. but the light has not responded. When I start the car the CEL lights up momentarily so I know that the bulb is o.k. but can anyone tell me why this would occur? Could my ECU be the culprit?
