need some help I need to find a place were I can get some 3" exhaust tubing and a couple of bends can anyone help me out. I also want to do a write up on it for anyone who is taking the same route.

thanks

Get that kind of stuff at VRS.

Get a turbo collector or something at burns

JCWhitney sells pretty good mandrel bent stuff, never dealt with it personally, but nothing but good reviews from friends.

I bought a full 3" mandrel SS system for around $280...

Keep that in mind..

I should also add that if you don't have a lift you will have a very sore back. I couldn't tell you how many times I had mine in and out test fitting each piece. We had car on a lift for a while, each piece we would cut, and tack in place, then take it down and TIG the seam, put it back up, check the fit and move on. I also opted to have a solid pipe from the dp right out to the rear of the car. I had a bad experiances with bolted flanges (test pipes) too many leaks.
MNGSX has a valid point, with the price of a quality system being quite reasonable sometimes the effort isn't worth it. In my case I love working with exhaust pipe, be it IC pipes or what have you. I even built my own 02 housing with dump tube. In both cases by the time you count up the hours and the money invested I could have bought one. But there is a certain pride in answering the "Who makes that exhaust?" question with the answer "I did".

True... True...

I just say this was a bosal system but I changed the tips and (maybe) added a resonator...

I looked into jc whitney and sumit and jegs but all I need is 4' peice of 3" and (2) 3" 45* and I found that I can order them all from the same place don't have or shippings outragous. So to keep down on the price in need to find a place that sells all of what I need that way they can be shipped at the same time and save in shipping. thats why I am going with www.vrsexhaust.com

I will keep you posted

Not to sound like a COMPLETE newb or a dumbass or anything, but what are the resonators for? I noticed you had 2 on yer system, miteclgst. I am in the midst of getting my exhaust parts together to build my 3" tubo-back. (Just bought a Borla XR-1 muffler). ALSO - my muffler came with a 3.5" inlet, and a 3" outlet. Do you think it really matters? it looks like it is a straight-thru design (just a round muffler, not offset or anything crazy).

THANKS!!!

That 3.5" inlet might cause you some minor problems, but nothing major. A resonator simply sits inline with the exhaust and quiets it down a little.

What he said about the resonator ^^^

I also think that it acts like a noise filter in a sense. It kind of mellows out the exhaust a little bit. I only have one resonator. It has a pretty straight through design so I can't imagine it impedes much flow at all. The other piece that you might be thinking of is the flex section. I would definately suggest getting one. The resonation of the exhaust will cause it to crack if you don't have that to absorb some of the vibrations.

I can't imagine why a muffler would have a larger inlet than outlet, it seems backwards actually. But if this is the case you can go to just about any parts store that stocks exhaust pipe and they have reducers. Just get a 3" - 3.5" or you may have to get more than one step, say 3"-3.25"then 3.25"-3.5" I think your best bet would be a truck store first. Their exhaust pieces are huge 4" in some cases. Your best chance finding a large size reducer would be there. Most auto stores only carry the popular sizes 1.5 1.75 2.125 2.25 2.5 3

Thanks about the resonator, and no, im not thinking of the flex section. I definately got one of those already (3" SS for $35 - yeah ebay!). and BTW - the flex section isnt as much to absorb the vibrations from the exhaust as much as to isolate the rest of the exhaust from the engine vibrations. Do you think I need to get a resonator? Or you think I should test it out w/o one first and see if I like the sound??

Also - about the muffler, do you guys think I could just turn it around and use the 3.5" side as my outlet?

I think it was built that way to create a little bit of backpressure, btw...you never know....

BTW - I am running a 3" hi-flo OBDII Compliant (48-state legal) cat. I am trying to build my car up but still pass emissions :) Just an FYI because, Im sure that will mellow the sound some...so thats why i may not need a resonator...

I ended up buying a DP from RRE. For 230 bucks, it just wasnt worth the money I would save considering the work. The catback is much less time consuming. I went to my favorite mienike and picked up 10 feet of 3" tubing, and had them weld a RRE bought Apexi flange to one end, for 30 bucks. I did a JC whitney 45 up to the 3" Dynomax Ultraflow Welded, then a 45 bend out parallel with the ground, like my old buscher 2.5" with the muffler angled. I've seen others do it with the exact same parts, but put the two 45s together so the muffler comes out parallel to the ground. I think the cat back cost me about 130-140 total, 60 or 70 was the muffler, the rest in 2 45 bends, a flange, and some gaskets.

Later on with bigger turbos the exhaust got louder. I added a Dynomax Race Bullet, which is a 3" perforated core (not the more restrictive louvered core, like most "resonators") and has only 4" outside diamter. I installed it in the RRE "long" downpipe, roughly where the cat would have been. Made a very noticeable difference in noise output, with no noticeable decrease in power. But shortly after that I switched to a turbo with a O trim/.82 AR hotside, and it was just as loud as it was before once again...

This was the first time I had ever picked up a welder (gasless Walmart wirefeed), and it was easy enough. Not pretty at all, but its strong and doesnt leak. Even after over 2 years. I've been meaning to add a writeup to my site for years, all that I managed to get up are a couple random pics :)

Good luck, its a fun project, and something you can be proud of when you are done.

I custom built my 3" Exhaust also. I just used the 3" PaceShitter Monza Down Pipe. Went to a exhaust shop and had them make a 16" Long 3" Pipe Flared at one end. Then went to another exhaust shop and had them build a 3" Cat-back to a MagnaFlow Muffler.

It total I spent $435.48. I saved alot of cash. I was going to go with the RnR 3" o2 Ellim Turbo-Back. But I decided to build my own for half the price and work just as well. Plus it sounds amazing.

By the way I got the pipes from www.vrsexhaust.com great people to order from everything was shipped out on friday so by wednesday I should have everything.

thanks for the help just have to get the camara back by the weekend so I can do a right up.
