hey, i'm putting a big 16g on my car this weekend and was wondering what boost level i would be safe with. I have full exhaust, i/c piping, intake, and walboro 190 fp. oh yeah and i have 93 octane.

I have a ported 16g, stock injectors 93 octane and a walbro 255lph and i can get away with 15-16psi and thats about it. I also have the MKIV i/c and 3" turboback exhaust and a bit more things. Every car reacts differently to boost i would just suggest using or buying a pocketlogger to make sure everything is all right. 2g's have a little better stock fuel system and intercooler than the 1g so you shouldn't have a problem in the ballpark of 15psi.

thanks for the advice, I'm also putting a tubular o2 housing with dump tube. are they extremely loud? Had to do something about boost creep.

I'd think 16-17psi is a bit much even for a 2g fuel system. Get a datalogger or borrow a friends for a few runs and tune for about no more than 14 counts of knock...preferably 12 counts.

Unfortunately 2g loggers can't log knock, but just look for timing pull instead. Without injectors and fuel control, I had to boost around 14psi for decent timing (16g + fuel pump only). That was on 91 oct so you could probably go a bit higher. I really wouldn't boost high w/o monitoring timing or egt's.

Exactly.
Every car is different.
Set it at about 15 at the most untill you get a PL or DSMlink or something like that.

Set the boost at where ever you get the most timing advance. That will probably be around 14-15psi on your setup. Remember that timing is going to make more power than a higher boost with less timing. Of course you will need a logger. Look for high teens at the end of a pull ( around 16-19 degree's ) and also you will want the timing curve to be rising. If it dips at all anywhere, it could be knock.

thanks for the info. I do have an egt, but i know that i need a pocketlogger. Where would be the best place to pick up a palm? what model would be the best to go with.

Got my Palm IIIxe off of Ebay for 70$ new. Those models will work perfectly fine. The newer color ones are just for bling, they don't do anything different.

www.pricegrabber.com

good search engine for prices.
or else you could go to

www.half.com

sorta like ebay

I have the m500 and thats perfect.
you could spend a little more money and go with the m505 though.

If I recall, the efficiency range is claimed to be 14-18 psi. Though I have seen people run higher than that, though I won't say any names. OMG

are you talking about the efficiency range on the T-25?
People have run 21 PSi on the 14b and more than that on the 16's

no, I was talking about the small 16G actually. However I only recall that as far back as oct 2002, when I first bought the car. I can't remember everything so.....:p.

I have ran over 20 psi on my B16G a couple of time.

Well, how about you stay quiet, and pay attention to the whole thread. I was only speaking of the setup he currently has, and not the set up I use to have, or you might have. The only bad info I see, is that it appears that he could run 20+psi with minimal mods. Perhaps you should heed your own advice.

well, i got the turbo on. only took me about 3 hours. No boost creep at all i'm set at 14 psi. My egt's are right at 1580. The car pulls alot stronger than the t25, but i can't wait to get a front mount, injectors, and fuel control. Does the hks afr operate just like the safc? And would it be wiser if i went with 650cc injectors or stay with 550cc.? I thought i saw somewhere that you could run a little more boost than with the 550s.

More fuel is always good if you can tune for it. I would personnally go with 660cc/min, but thats me. 550cc/min is good enough for a 16G that isn't going past 20psi.

Don't go for the HKS AFR, its overpriced and works the same as a S-AFC. Pick up a cheap first gen S-AFC and some 550cc/min injectors and you should be good for some more boost. Hows that clutch? Might want to think about that while the power goes up. Check out the Feramic clutch from AMS.

My friend runs 18 PSi with stock 450s
You will be able to go more then 20psi with 550s
I dont think that people realise how far 450s and the 14b can go.

The 97+ ecu is very timing sensitive to increases in airflow. Although 550's work fine with 1G's this is not the same case on a 97. Unless you go with dsmlink or a standalone, the only way to properly mask airflow using an SAFC is with larger injectors (ie 660s). Not masking enough airflow will put you on a lower timing map regardless if there's knock or not. Again, keep in mind this is for 97 and up cars. v8killerr1, IMO you should just get 660s since you have a 97. It has more room to play with and will set you up nicely when you get tired of that 16g and decide to go green:)
