So I recently built a motor for a friend. When he came to get the engine I told him to double check the torque on everything on the front cover and retorque the Headstuds. We get to the shop we did a once over and I made a base tune for the new motor. We started the motor and oil was pouring out underneath the transmission .... POURING. We were obviously stumped..... I thought maybe rear main? Either way I told him to pull the trans, which we did in 20 minutes. The f***ing galley plug was missing !!! The block has been sitting for a long time and the machinist claimed he didn’t remove it. At some point the galley plug was removed and wasnt reinstalled. I’m aware of the huge oversight on my part but if I don’t remove them to clean the block it’s not something I usually check for. You live and you learn I guess. I know I’ll be checking for them now ...

DAM MAN.....I can feel your frustration right now! I just watched my 7 bolt motor on a maiden drive last night and was really happy, it even boosted good beside me as we took all 3 DSM's on a road cruise last night.
Yes you should have looked at that when doing the rear main but hell we are all human. Don't beat yourself up over it. How long did you run it?
    Pops

Its probably going to be ok, just check a couple rod bearings to make you feel better. :thumb:

I've had the same thing happen on a 420a years ago. Sent it to the machine shop and asked them to do all the core plugs for me, assembled motor after receiving it and never though to check for the main galley plug. Same exact thing.
Mopped up almost 3 quarts of oil after that. That engine was fine though and it ran for almost 1.5 min before I noticed the oil (cramped, small garage build).

Funny enough I just helped my buddy pull his lightnings trans to check a major oil leak that we thought was the rear main seal. Nope. Main galley plug unseated and was pushing oil right past the rear main plate into the bellhousing. I tapped it and put a pipe plug in it.

As Pops said, check the bearings and let her rip. We all miss stuff sometimes, especially when stuff changes hands during a build and you don't know what someone did with it.

But until you HEAR it again.....you're gonna be like me.....hmmmm. I've dumped 10 qts (5 x 2) on a SBC and didn't have the fkn oil filter on after finishing a build at 2am the day before.
It all ended up fine tho. :thumb:

I would be most concerned with the cam bearings in the head since they are the last thing to get oil to them, maybe pull some and check for scoring.

Thanks Matt, true. I think a 4.5 second spin is probably ok if there was in lube up there. If it were dry, I definitely would be concerned up top.
So @SasaniFab , is it fixed now and back together or going through that part right now?
Your friend is lucky he has you! You did the same thing for him that I did for my son, build a motor.

If any kind of assembly lube was used I wouldn't be worried for that amount of time. Sure it's not pressurized, but I've seen heads run unpressurized for close to a minute with no issue as long as there was some oil or lube on them.

Absolutely no bloblem if lube was used during assembly. Oil change has almost same effect.
