Alright. I just ordered a k&n filter, and was planning on cutting off the air can as much as possible leaving enough for the clamps (or whatever you want to call them) to snap down the filter. I just don't think it looks that great, so i was wondering if there was anything else I could do to hold the filter on. What have you guys done?

Thanks

..and build a baffle to keep the heat captured under the hood from getting sucked in the air filter - why the can was installed in the first place to draw in cool air from the outside. Denser, cooler air is more productive than warm thinner air.

Do the can hack and you'll have to revamp the A/F maps for more airflow, meaning more fuel being used.

I found that just cutting the housing intake housing an inch passed the initial lip for the clips worked perfectly. But make sure you have some way to stop it flopping into the transmission linkages, my auto wouldn't go into gear sometimes or get stuck in gear do to that happening....took me to long to find out why it was getting stuck.

If anyone actually watch's mighty car mods for Australia they actually dyno tested different cars with stock intake setups and just k&N air filters with no heat shields. Very interesting and proven to actually rob performance with out a full intake system.

Right but I wonder how many in the first 5 pages here Engine Photos - DSMtuners Gallery have the stock aircan or airbox if 2g?

I happened to go sesemie street on it, and allready counted.

This would be your best bet with the k&n and building a baffle. Looks better and will perform better if done right.

Don't know where the guy got it, but my previous owner somehow has the MAF INSIDE the filter.

That should be the factory one, just buy a k&n direct replacement air filter which is available from a lot of places. I didn't have the clips for the air box on mine so I had to silicone it on, but its still easily removable. I also moved it up to where the old air box use to be and made a mount to hold it, and gutted all of the plates and vents that were behind the headlight. Not a true CAI, but definitely cooler than being about a foot from the header (before I wrapped it). Still plan to drop it below the fender, but havn't done it yet.

I bought an accel cool blue reusable that is very similar in construction and materials to the K&N drop in filter. The seller on ebay named chimptoast or something like that. Fairly reasonable cost and seemed to work fine. I used the k&n filter oil on it.

You can try to find an HKS Supega flow, but I'm pretty sure they stopped making them awhile back. K&N made an FIPK that was basically a filter, some brackets, and ring to hold the filter to the stock aircan lid. Not even sure of they still make this either, since most people just cut the stock air can......
